Raised in Woodbridge, New Jersey, Stewart eventually made Jacksonville his home for more than 50 years. He was a retired shipbuilder for SUPSHIP Jacksonville with the U.S. Navy, and previously worked as a supervising engineer for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. A skilled craftsman and lifelong model shipbuilder, he created a personal fleet of over 300 detailed, to-scale replicas of U.S. Naval ships, many of them built entirely from scratch. In his later years, he turned his attention to carving intricate birds and sea life with the same precision and care. Among his many hobbies, stamp collecting held a special place in his heart. If you were close to Stew, chances are you saved canceled stamps for him—and he appreciated it.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Sandra E. Carpenter; his daughter, Susan J. Carpenter; and his parents, Samuel and Ida Carpenter. He is survived by his daughter, Sally Carpenter of Jacksonville, Florida.
A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, July 1, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. in the Beth Shalom section of Evergreen Cemetery, 4535 Main Street, Jacksonville, Florida 32206 (Gate 5). In lieu of flowers, those desiring may make contributions to the Susan G. Koman for the Cure organization.
