Susan had an extraordinary life. She started her professional life in the fashion industry in New York modeling clothes, then became a reporter for the Charlotte Observer, a real estate broker, and an educator. She received her BA in Romance Languages, Literature and Linguistics from the University of Pennsylvania. As an educator she helped hundreds of refugees learn to speak English as a second language. She had a passion for learning and sharing her knowledge, not just about language, but different cultures. Her focus was not just on helping her students to learn the language of their adopted Country, but also helping them to assimilate to American culture. She was kind and generous with her time and knowledge.
Susan was also an animal lover, and was passionate about all animals, but especially her cats, and her rabbit, Amazing Grace. Susan was a beloved friend to many throughout her life, always willing to help. Susan was an accomplished cook and loved to share her passion for ethnic food with family and friends whenever possible.
Susan was the only daughter of Alexander Cornelius “Bill” Summerville and Dorothy Henkel Summerville. Her son, David Boehmer, passed away in 2011. She is survived by her daughter Alice Shriver O’Carroll, Son-in-Law Mark O’Carroll, step-daughters, Libby Moodie and Bonnie Shwery; grandchildren, Kelsey Bethel, Bryan O’Carroll, Brendan O’Carroll, JR McCusker, and Kimberly Hagel; and great-grandchildren Kateie Hagel, Gavin Bethel and Madelyn Bethel.
