He served in the Army Air Corp during World War II. He went on to graduate Phi Beta Kappa from Rutgers University. For 17 years, he worked in the Pharmaceutical industry before attending the Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine at the age of 42. He served as a Family Practitioner for the next 37 years before he finally retired at the age of 83.
He was an active member until his death at Hodges Boulevard Presbyterian Church.
Dr. Abbey was preceded in death by his wife, Patricia. He is survived by his sons: Tom (Barbara), Bruce (Sherri), and Joe (Amanda); grandsons: Kyle, Austin, and Christopher; and great-grandchildren: Ryan and Sloane.
