

Wallace “Tom” Novak, 67, of Jacksonville, passed away on October 26, 2011 at his residence. Tom was born on March 15, 1944 in Everett, WA to the late Thomas and Mildred (St. Romain) Novak. Tom was a 1962 graduate of Russellville High School. He received numerous athletic awards in high school and college. He attended Arkansas Tech University on a football scholarship, and graduated in 1966 with a degree in Geology. Tom began his distinguished public service career in 1967 with the US Army Corps of Engineers' Little Rock District. Tom’s contributions throughout his 40 year career with the Corps are highlighted by his selfless service as an Army civilian in Korea during the Vietnam War as well as Saudi Arabia during Operation Desert Shield. To recognize his dedication and superior performance, he was awarded an Achievement Medal 1991, Employee of the Year in 1994, and a Commander’s Award in 2001. In 2011 he was awarded the prestigious de Fleury Medal which recognizes superior service to the Engineer Regiment by the Chief of Engineers. Tom was a member of the St. Joseph Catholic Church, he enjoyed history, and he loved restoring old cars. He is survived by his loving wife, Irene Novak; his brother, Steve Novak, and his loving dog, Quigley. Tom’s family appreciates all the expressions of love from his Jacksonville Corps of Engineers family and friends.
