

Virginia Merle Daughtry Hurley, age 98, of Sun City Center, Florida, went to be with the Lord on December 23, 2012. Virginia was predeceased by her parents, Horace and Laidler Daughtry; her husband, Roland Hurley; a sister, Laidler Campbell; and her daughter Virginia Ross. Virginia was born in Cairo, Georgia and received her early education in Georgia and Florida. Virginia graduated from Hillsborough High School, Tampa, FL. in 1932. Virginia married Roland Hurley in 1937 and together they owned and operated Brentwood Golf Course, in Jacksonville, FL. for many years. During her youth, Virginia and her sister were accomplished singers and performed at numerous churches and professional venues. Virginia was a loyal wife and partner to Roland at the Brentwood Golf Course. Virginia was active in many social and civic organizations, but was most passionate about introducing the sport of golf to young women. Virginia was a longtime member and supporter of the Jacksonville Women’s Golf Association. Virginia attended Avondale Baptist Church for many decades and sang in the choir, before moving her membership to Terry Parker Baptist Church. Virginia and Roland were married 70 years and traveled the United States together and had a wonderful life.
Virginia is survived by 5 grandchildren, Renee Singh, Steven Parker, Samantha Ross, Victoria Ross and Mary Ann Chenery, several great grandchildren, and a host of nieces and nephews. Additionally, Virginia is also survived by a special sister-in law, Juanita Hurley, who in later years was her best friend and caretaker.
The family will receive friends on Saturday, January 5, 2013 beginning at 1:00 pm at Hardage-Giddens Oaklawn Chapel, 4801 San Jose Blvd., Jacksonville, FL 32207. The funeral will follow visitation at 2:00 pm with interment immediately after in Oaklawn Cemetery.
