Walter “Audie” Mott Lampe passed away peacefully on the morning of July 13, 2014. He was born January 31, 1941, the second son of Diedrich and Cleo Lampe. He attended Kirby Smith grammar school, and graduated from Andrew Jackson High School in 1958. After graduation he joined the Naval Reserve and attended South Georgia College, Douglas, Georgia where he met his future wife, Jo Ann Green. He then transferred to the University of Georgia in the fall of 1961. While attending the University he was called to active duty in the Navy and served two years. During that time, he and Jo Ann were married and at the time of his death, they had been married 51 years. He graduated in the top 5% of his class in the winter of 1966. While at Georgia he was president of Alpha Kappa Psi, business fraternity and a Member of Alpha Tau Omega social fraternity. When he returned to Jacksonville he worked as a real estate appraiser and later joined in partnership with Stewart B. Steeg. During the years of being a successful appraiser he earned his MAI. At that time he was the youngest to achieve that designation. After many years of partnership, he founded his own company, Walter M. Lampe, lnc., now Lampe Roy and Associates. He was a member of the American Institute of Real Estate Appraisers, Society of Real Estate Appraisers, and International Right of Way
Association. Before his retirement he was the President of Florida-Georgia Blood Bank, on several boards of the University of Georgia, and the Vince Dooley Library Fund at the University. He was on the Sports and Entertainment Commission for the city of Jacksonville, 1989, and was also past Commodore of The Florida Yacht Club and elected into The Gridiron Society. He was a member of The Seminole Club, University Club and Ponte Vedra Club. Walter had many loves in his life; his home in the mountains on Lake Rabun, piloting his Baron airplane, being captain of his beautiful LIWA-JO IV, his Georgia Bulldogs, his
ATO brothers, Bluegrass music, all his antique cars, but most of all his family. He was predeceased by his parents and his younger brother, Garland Lampe. He is survived by his wife, Jo Ann, his daughter Lisa Lampe Rogers (Nathan) his son, Walter M. Lampe, Jr., (Jill) his beloved grandchildren, Mead, Keadle and Garland Rogers. He is also survived by his older brother Diedrich “Skippy” Lampe (Lyn) and nieces Catherine and Kristin.
A memorial service will be held at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, 4129 Oxford Ave. on Thursday, July 17 at 1 p.m. Memorials may be made to M. D. Anderson Cancer Center, 1515 Holcombe Blvd. Houston, TX. 77030, St. Mark’s Episcopal Day School, The Episcopal High School of Jacksonville, or Terry College of Business, University of Georgia.
