Wes was born in Jacksonville on November 18, 1953 to Frances Davis and Wesley Cross Paxson. He attended The Bolles School and received a degree in Electrical Engineering from Georgia Tech University.
Wes will be remembered for his dry, intelligent sense of humor—a humor that was in fact so dry and singular as to occasionally sail right over the heads of some of his audience. A conversation with Wes was always sure to include something amusing and unexpected.
Wes was one of the most accomplished amateur golfers in the state. He played at Georgia Tech and throughout his adult life, qualifying for and competing in three British Amateur Championships, five US Amateur Championships and many Mid Amateur and Senior Championships. He won the Senior Amateur Championship four times and the JAGA City Amateur Championship in 1996. Wes also won a number of local club championships, including five at Deerwood Country Club, five at St. Johns Golf & Country Club, three at San Jose Country Club and two at Sawgrass Country Club.
When Wes started a family with his wife, Susan, he carried his love of sports into the raising of their three sons, Wesley III, Justin and Mark. It was an almost daily ritual for the boys to shoot hoops with their dad in the driveway. Wes was dedicated to their success and spent many enjoyable years coaching their basketball and baseball teams.
Wes worked at W.W. Gay and his wife, Susan, wishes to pass along her thanks to his team and all the employees for all of their love and support over the years.
Wes is survived by his wife of 42 years, Susan Harby Paxson; his sons, Wesley III, Justin (Katrina) and Mark Paxson; his grandchildren, Kiara and Duncan Paxson; his mother, Frances Davis Paxson; his father, Wesley (Betty) Cross Paxson Sr.; and his sister, Kathryn Paxson. Wes passed away after a short battle with cancer. The family would like to thank Dr. Unni Thomas and all of the nurses and staff at Cancer Specialists of North Florida for their excellent care.
The Paxson family would also like to thank St. John’s Golf and Country Club for all of the wonderful memories; Pastor George Spencer, Pastor Kevin Griffen and all of the members of CrossRoad United Methodist Church; and all of the family and friends who have offered their support during this difficult time.
In lieu of flowers, the family would like donations to be made to The First Tee of North Florida, an organization that enriches the lives of young people through the game of golf; and CrossRoad United Methodist Church.
A Memorial Service will be held on Tuesday, December 11 at 2 p.m. at CrossRoad United Methodist Church in Jacksonville, located at 10005 Gate Parkway North.
