I heard of the death of William Bates Cole, three nights ago, when I was visiting a friend who showed me a handed-down appraisal Bates had written and documented,  over 60 years ago.  The friend did not know that I had known Coles for decades, but was showing me the appraisal as a part of a library full of Miami History.  I felt like I should have been wearing museum-archival white cotton gloves, as I turned the pages of the massive  work, Bible-thick, with its infinite detail, and beautiful, original, first-generation photographs.  If William Bates Cole took care of himself, as well as he obviously cared about the quality of his performance in the  execution of that appraisal, I understand why he lived so long.
