Bill is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Kathy, daughters Kelly, Krissy Hoffman (Chris), Patty Blaser (Cory), as well as his son Kevin (Jessie), and seven grandchildren, Alyssa, Keira, Jake, Adriana, Luke, Roan and Sean, and his brother, James Courtney.
Bill was born on February 12, 1943 to Mary Genevieve & William Thomas in Brooklyn, New York. After graduating from Bayside High School in 1959, he went on to study at Duquesne University, and in 1968 received his Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from St. John’s University. Between his high school and college graduations, Bill kept quite busy. He served six years in the US Marine Corp Reserve, while also working as a computer programmer at Williamsburg Savings Bank, a data processor at Nassau Hospital, a NYC Taxicab Driver, and worked as a clerk with the Federal Bureau of Investigation in New York City. During this time, Bill also met Kathy Taylor, who he married in 1968.
In 1969 Bill became a Special Agent with the FBI in Washington, D. C. His career with the FBI took him to Detroit, Michigan, and then back to D.C., working at both the Washington Field Office and the FBI Headquarters. While there, he earned a Master of Science, Administration of Justice, with a Major in Law Enforcement at American University. In 1979 the family moved to Jacksonville, Florida, where Bill worked as a Supervisory Special Agent. He retired in 1993 after 27 years with the Bureau. Bill then pivoted to teaching, working as an Instructor at both Webster University and FCCJ. During this time, he did background checks for the Federal Government while also working as a Private Investigator. In 2000, Bill was hired by Jacksonville University to be the Director of Security, but sadly months later suffered a massive stroke.
While his stroke prematurely ended his professional career, he worked hard to rehabilitate, enabling him to continue to work on his neighborhood Board of Directors, while also continuing to volunteer for many other community organizations.
In lieu of flowers, Bill and the family request donations to either the Former Agents of the FBI Organization (socxfbi.org), Community Hospice & Palliative Care (communityhospice.com), or the Arc Jacksonville (arcjacksonville.org).
Visitation will be held from 9:00 am to 11:00 am on Saturday, April 9, 2022, at Prince of Peace Parish, 6320 Bennett Road, Jacksonville, FL 32216 with Funeral Mass immediately following with Fr. Michael Larkin as Celebrant and Fr. Tom Willis and Fr. Callistus Onwere as Concelebrants. Immediately following the Funeral Mass, a reception will be held in the church’s Fellowship Hall.
