William Franklyn Duke

Bill graduated from Alachua High School in 1954 and spent two years at Marion Military Institute (Industrial Engineering) in Alabama.

He was in the U.S. Naval Reserves for 8 years and served as a volunteer for the Alachua Fire Department. Bill was an avid Florida Gators fan.

He enjoyed playing golf and going deep sea fishing. He was the kind of man that made one feel safe. He had an unwavering love for his family. His sons meant everything to him. He was gifted with knowing what was truly important in life.

Bill worked for Winn-Dixie Stores Inc. as Director of Warehousing and Transportation for 395 stores in 4 states. Later, he worked for Super Foods in Orlando. Leaving the grocery industry, he enthusiastically started his own successful distributorship for seafood condiments etc., a venture that combined his strong work ethic with his passion for his work. He traveled along the east coast from Wilmington, NC to Ft Lauderdale, FL. At age 79, he reluctantly retired.

As an adult Bill accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior. He was an involved member of Christ the Messiah Church. He believed the Bible to be the inerrant Word of God and the only real truth. His favorite verse was John 3:16.

Bill is survived by his loving wife of 47 years Dede (née Roberts); their son George (wife Laura) and their children Grayson, Gunnar, and Addie.

Also, Toni (née Davis) Hatchett his former wife and their three sons: Bill Jr. (wife Michelle); their children Zach and Sidney; Mark (wife Sandy); their children Heidi and Gage; and Greg. Bill has one great grandchild, Hadley, as well as many nieces and nephews.

A private graveside service attended by the family has already taken place. In remembrance of Bill, the family asks that any charitable contributions be directed to the FL Sheriff Boys Ranch or Gideons International.
