William Leonard Kaler

William Kaler, known to many as Bill, Mr. Kaler, or Uncle Bill, was a beloved father, husband, brother, uncle, and friend. He passed away peacefully on August 22, 2026, just six days before his 96th birthday. He lived a long and meaningful life filled with family, friendships, hard work, good food, and a deep love for the people and pets who brought him joy.

Born on August 28, 1930, William was the son of the late Morris and Rose Kaler. He was a proud graduate of Georgia Tech and went on to spend most of his working life in the produce business.

William began his career in Miami, working at Kaler Produce alongside his brother, Hermie, and later with other co-owners. After moving to Jacksonville, he continued his career with Mosovitz Produce, which later became Sunrise Produce. He dedicated decades to the produce industry and finally retired at the age of 85.

While William was a hardworking businessman, those who knew him best will remember his love of cooking. He was the chef of the family and loved preparing food for others. His cooking was enjoyed by family, friends, and coworkers, both at home and at work.

When William and his wife, Eleanor, first married, she taught him how to cook. Because he went to work very early in the morning—often around 3 or 4 a.m.—and came home in the early afternoon, cooking became a natural part of his life. Over the years, he became the family chef, while Eleanor was known for her Jell-O and desserts. William also taught his daughter, Missy, many things in the kitchen and passed along his knowledge and love of good food.

William loved life and loved staying connected with his family and friends. He enjoyed reaching out, catching up, sharing stories, and knowing what was happening in the lives of those he cared about. He especially enjoyed hearing about Missy and Amy Jo’s travels and adventures, often living vicariously through their stories and experiences.

He loved his pets and spoiled them rotten. He also cared deeply about animals and regularly donated to the Humane Society. In his memory, the family asks that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Humane Society, an animal shelter, or an animal welfare organization of your choice.

William was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Eleanor Kaler; his son, Adam Kaler; and his parents, Morris and Rose Kaler.

He is survived by his daughter, Missy Kaler, and her wife, Amy Jo, along with extended family, friends, and all those whose lives he touched throughout his 95 years.

The family would also like to give special recognition and heartfelt thanks to Donna Arthur, a dear family friend who lived with William and lovingly cared for him for the past seven years. Donna became much more than a caretaker—she was a trusted friend and an important part of William’s life and the family’s. Her devotion, companionship, and care will always be remembered and deeply appreciated.

William lived 95 years and touched many lives along the way. He will be remembered for his delicious cooking, his love of animals, and his wonderful stories and conversations. He will be deeply missed and forever loved.

A funeral service will be held on his birthday, August 28, Hardage-Giddens Funeral Home of Mandarin, located at 11801 San Jose Blvd, Jacksonville, FL 32223. He will be laid to rest at Mandarin Cemetery.

Following the burial, family and close friends are invited to gather at Bill’s home for a small, informal gathering to celebrate his life and share memories.
