William “Bill” John Lyons, 89, of Jacksonville, Florida, passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, January 12, 2025, one week before his 90th birthday. He was born on January 19, 1935 (same month as Elvis) in Covington, Kentucky, the second of two children, to the late Willliam James and Catherine Tiernan Lyons. Bill grew up in Huntington, West Virginia and graduated from St. Joseph’s Catholic High School. He attended Marshall University before serving in the US Army during the Korean War. After leaving the service, Bill graduated from Thomas More University and started a long career with the AC Nielsen Company. He married Helen Gorey in Paris, Kentucky on April 28, 1962, and the newlyweds relocated to Jacksonville, living in Arlington before establishing residence in Riverside for 50 years. After his first retirement, Bill worked as a seasonal IRS employee for many years.
Throughout his life, Bill always put his family first, demonstrating his deep love and unwavering support. He was a constant presence at his children’s and grandchildren’s activities, whether he was coaching or spectating. His home was a place where all were welcome, especially his four-legged and feathered pets. Bill made others feel at ease and he took a keen interest in his children’s friends, endearing them with his warmness and quick wit. He had a phenomenal memory and could remember detailed conversations years later.
In his retired years, his wife volunteered Bill for many things. Sometimes he’d grumble about it, but she knew what was best for him. Helping others gave Bill great joy and he took pride in every task he was assigned: driving elder friends to medical appointments, delivering Meals on Wheels, volunteering to walk dogs at the Humane Society, ushering at Times Union Artist Series performances. Bill had a strong Catholic faith and was active in St. Paul’s Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus.
Bill is survived by his five children, Will (Julie), Mike (De), Molly (Mark) Dunn, Kevin, and Tim (Rebecca). "Pop” is also survived by ten grandchildren; Kaitlyn (John) Carr; Lucy, Patrick, Grace, Kevin, Jack, and Adeline Lyons; Helen, Ethan, and Lillie Dunn and one great grandchild; Anders Carr. Bill was blessed with many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years Helen, his sister Mary Ann Enrico, and his grandson Andrew Lyons.
The family extends our deepest gratitude to his primary care provider, Margaret Mosher, APRN, who offered compassionate health care to Bill in his later years.
A memorial mass will be celebrated at 9:30 am, Friday, February 7th at St. Paul's Catholic Church located in Riverside (2609 Park St, 32204) followed by a reception in the Church auditorium. Arrangements are under the care of Corey-Kerlin Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, please donate to St. Paul's Catholic School, the Friends of Willow Branch Library, or the charity of your choice.
