William Albert Masterson, affectionately known as “Bat” to his close friends and family, of Jacksonville, Florida, passed away on November 1, 2026, at the age of 92, following a brief battle with cancer. He went home to be with the Lord, surrounded by the love of his family. His final days were filled with visits from loved ones, quiet moments of reading, and peaceful reflection on a life well lived.
Bill was born in Mt. Clemens, Michigan, and moved to Florida with his family at an early age. He spent his childhood in Miami and Marietta before settling in Jacksonville with his parents. A 1952 graduate of Lee High School, Bill proudly served his country in the United States Army. Following his military service, he attended Florida State University on the GI Bill, earning a bachelor's degree in Criminology and later pursuing graduate studies.
Bill began his professional career with the McGiffin Company before joining Brumos Motor Company, where he spent more than 25 years. He had a natural gift for connecting with people and truly enjoyed helping others find just the right car. His passion for automobiles extended well beyond his career. He was an enthusiastic follower of IMSA sports car racing and had a lifelong appreciation for vintage automobiles.
Faith and friendship were central to Bill's life. He was a devoted and active member of Southside Methodist Church, where he served on the Garden and Stewardship Committees and regularly volunteered at Wednesday night suppers. His church family and neighbors were among his dearest friends, and he treasured the relationships he built over the years.
Bill found joy in life's simple pleasures. He loved the mountains of North Georgia, spending time at the beach, fishing, and settling in with a good book. He was a natural conversationalist who never met a stranger. Whether catching up with an old friend or striking up a conversation with someone he had just met, Bill had a way of making people feel welcome. He was generous with his time, quick to lend a helping hand, and always willing to do what he could for someone in need.
Above all, Bill cherished his family. He is survived by Patricia Houser Masterson, his beloved wife of 65 years; his daughter, Michele Clements, and son-in-law, Charles Clements, of Jacksonville; and his grandchildren, Caroline Clements of Nashville, Tennessee, and Sam Clements of Jacksonville.
Bill will be remembered for his kindness, his warmth, his love of conversation, and the countless friendships he made along the way. His was a life defined by faith, family, friendship, and a genuine interest in others. He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who had the pleasure of knowing him. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Southside Methodist Church, 3120 Hendricks Avenue, Jacksonville, FL 32207.
