WILLIAM OLIVER SCAIFE, JR., 76, died March 2, 2013 after a brief illness. A lifelong resident of Jacksonville, he was born on March 20, 1936, the son of the late William Oliver Scaife and the late Abbie Mathews Scaife. Mr. Scaife attended local public schools, graduating from Robert E. Lee High School in 1954. In his youth, he was active in the Boy Scouts, earning the rank of Eagle Scout with the Bronze and Gold Palms. He graduated from Duke University with a B.A. degree and the University of Florida, College of Law with a J.D. degree. During the Berlin Crisis, Mr. Scaife served in the U.S. Navy aboard the destroyer, U.S.S. Hunt. He was a member of the Florida Bar and was an attorney for Winn-Dixie Stores, Inc., having retired in 1996. Mr. Scaife was a lifelong member of Riverside Park United Methodist Church, where he taught Sunday School, served as Chairman of the Administrative Board, and served as the Treasurer of the Church. He was also a Trustee of the Church and a member of the Church usher team. Mr. Scaife also served on the Board of Directors of the Riverside Park Apartments, Inc.
Mr. Scaife is survived by his wife, Geraldine T. Scaife (Cookie); sons, William Oliver Scaife, III (Stacey) of Fleming Island and Shelton Corbett Scaife (Karen) of Fleming Island; daughters, Darlene Scaife Hampton (Wycke) of Jacksonville, Elizabeth Johnson Bogdan (Matthew) of Orlando, and Tina Johnson Howard (David) of Navarre, Florida; ten grandchildren, Shelton Corbett Scaife, Jr., Joshua David Scaife, William Oliver Scaife, IV, Victoria Taylor Scaife, Ashley Elizabeth Howard, Meagan Danielle Howard, Ryan Patrick Bogdan, Ben Preston Bogdan, Wade Mathews Hampton, and Reid McKissick Hampton; and one great-grandchild, Chloe Alexis Scaife.
Visitation will be held at Hardage Giddens Funeral Home, 729 Edgewood Avenue South, Friday, March 8, 2013, from 6 to 8 pm. Services will be held on Saturday, March 9, 2013, at 11:00 am, at Riverside Park United Methodist Church, 819 Park Street, with The Reverend Rafe Vigil, Pastor of the Church, and Dr. William G. Katibah, Jr., Interim Pastor, Huntersville Presbyterian Church, Huntersville, North Carolina, officiating. Interment will follow at Evergreen Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Riverside Park United Methodist Church, or Community Hospice of Northeast Florida.
