William “Curt” Wonicker, 77, of Naples and Jacksonville, Florida, died April 3, 2014, at Community Hospice in St. Vicent’s Hospital. He served in the Marine Corps and retired from the U.S. Navy as Lt. Commander after serving 27 years with the military. His military career includes Operations Officer for Riverine Task Force (CTF-115) in Vietnam; Flag Lt/Aide to the Admiral in Pearl Harbor and assisted in the Apollo 13 recovery operation and Operations Officer for the Naval Base in Adak, Alaska. Additionally, he was an Airborne Electronic Warfare Officer and served two tours with VQ-2 in Rota, Spain. He was awarded the Bronze Star for service in Vietnam. He was employed with Information Spectrum in Washington, DC for thirteen years as a Logistics Manager in Foreign Military Sales and retired to Naples, Florida, in 1995. In his retirement in Naples he was a substitute teacher with the Collier County School System; a flight instructor at the Naples Airport and real estate investor.
Curt was a 1953 graduate of Landon High School and was a member of the football team. He graduated from Valdosta State College
and received his Master’s Degree in International Affairs from The George Washington University.
He was preceded in death by his parents Otto and Ruby Wonicker and brother Karl Wonicker.
He is survived by his sons William Ashley and Eric Curtis, sisters Bertha Jeanne Wonicker Williams, Mari Wonicker Riggins and Martha Wonicker Duensing and numerous nephews and nieces.
Celebration of life will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, April 12, 2014, at Elizabeth Swaim Memorial United Methodist Church located 1620 Naldo Avenue in southside. The family request that in lieu of flowers a contribution be made in his memory to a charity of choice or any military support organization.
