Due to her father’s career, Mrs. Donaldson spent her teenage years living in Algeria, Tunisia, Morocco and Egypt, which gave her a unique perspective of worldwide events. As a young adult, she experienced the horrors of the Nazi occupation of France. Mrs. Donaldson was a student of the Brest School in France where she attended sewing and fashion classes. She met her late husband, Herschel Donaldson, after D-Day and became a war bride and a naturalized citizen of the United States. She used her skills to ultimately become head seamstress for Furchgott’s and Lily Rubin. In her later years, she was a volunteer at Baptist Hospital Jacksonville for fifteen years. Mrs. Donaldson was also a founding member of The Overseas Women’s Club of Jacksonville.
Mrs. Donaldson is survived by her son, Daniel H. Donaldson; her grandsons, Daniel G. Donaldson and Patrick Donaldson; her sister Paulette Thomas; her niece Brigitte and nephew Michel Thomas; and her nieces Mumu, Patricia and Lilliann Foll. She was preceded in death by her husband, Herschel Donaldson, and her son, James Donaldson.
There will be a graveside service at Greenlawn Cemetery in Jacksonville on Wednesday, August 18, 2010 beginning at 10:30 am. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be made to Community Hospice of Northeast Florida or a charity of your choice. Arrangements by Greenlawn Funeral Home.
