Zadok Stephen Wigh was born on May 3rd, 2010 to Stephanie and Vincent. Many have asked how we came up with his name. One day we were reading Scripture together and came across the name “Zadok”. We both that it’s a really neat name and if we ever had a son, we’d call him Zadok. Well, the Lord gave us a son and we named him Zadok. In the Old Testament, he was a high priest that remained faithful to both God and His servant David, even when almost everyone else turned against them. His name means “Righteous.” More specifically, it means “God is my righteousness.”
Zadok couldn’t wait to enter the world. In fact, we almost had him in the hospital parking lot! Hospital staff could not even check in Stephanie before he came out to be part of our lives. As a baby, we nicknamed him “chubs”. He looked like a little sumo wrestler in his first 6 months. He weighed 18 pounds at 3 months.
As he grew into a little boy he quickly captured the hearts of everyone who knew him. He loved to hunt for bugs and creepy crawling things. He loved nature and being outside. He was both a momma’s boy and daddy’s boy. He had a witty type of humor to him, and saw the world in such a unique way. He’d often tell us “when you I grow up, and you turn into babies, I’ll change your diaper.” He thought grown ups and children switched places. And I guess that’s true in some sense!
He was the typical boy. Picking up snails and bringing them inside. Keeping frogs and toads, and even tried to pet a wasp once. The things he said and did would always make anyone around him smile. He never pronounced “L” sounds, but in his cute little boy voice would use a “Y”, saying things like “mom I yike fruit snacks for breakfast.”
Mom would often call him “the cutest boy that ever lived.” He’d smile. He loved his little cousin Asher who was only 5 months apart from him. They would do everything together, both loving and fighting one another. Together they were a force to be reckoned with!
He loved the beach with mom. Loved movies and junk food with his Paw Paw and Amma. He’d call his other grandfather “grand-podder.” He loved to pretend to be a super hero and shoot spider webs on grandpodder, or use “wolverine claws” when he was upset.
Zay’s last birthday was his 4th birthday. He had begun to get sick at that time, but that day was blessed without any sickness or throwing up. So many family and friends came. It was a fun day for all of us. About three weeks later he was diagnosed with a brain tumor.
Doctors and medical staff did their best to treat him, but the cancer did not respond typically. In addition to the doctors who tried to save his life, many countless family and friends did as well to. Having been in the hospital nearly 3 months, the support of family and friends contributed to helping his parents stay and take care of him during treatment. Despite all the efforts, the terrible disease of cancer was not treatable. He went home to be with Jesus on September 27th. He leaves behind his father Vincent and mother Stephanie, his sister Hannah. As well as his “Pow Pow” Glenn Barrs, “Ammaw” Elizabeth Barrs, “Grand-podder” Stephen Wigh, Grandma Bon, Uncle Jim, Aunt Tina and Uncle Chris, cousins Colby and Caitlyn. Cousins Asher, Isla and Aunt Erica and Uncle Brian. Also great grand parents, Charles and Muriel Barrs and Donald and Darlene Gibson.
