Just a Marine family that read about the loss of another Marine and sadly understands how this feels. The unimaginable loss...
You’re in our hearts.
May you be surrounded by loving people. Praying for you all to have strength. Its obvious from all accounts here how much Staff Sergeant Van Vliet loved his family and fellow Marines. May that love carry you to live a life that honors Staff Sergeant Van Vliet always.
God bless you all

Michael and Barbara welcomed me into their home when I was stationed thousands of miles away from my home. I ate dinner with Michael and his family. He would often advise me on things I could improve on and make it clear when I was doing things correctly. I truly looked up to this man, he was kind and loving. The way he played with his kids showed me that great fathers do exist, you reached out to me in some of my darkest moments. I love my friend, and I'll miss you!

Our family came down stayed together working on his motorcycle one day, in his drive way with him, we were just talking about his family, future retirement from the marines & the love he had for his wife and sons. He loved hanging out with us when we came into town to visit and when they came and stayed and all we talked about was getting together more. I remember meeting him for the 1st time 10 years ago , I had this idea of a typical marine , cool as can be , typical jarhead, which wasn’t entirely true , but close , getting to know him he was just so much more than what was on the cover. It was just great sense of love and wholeness , having him and the family around all together, with all of ours, all as one big cluster of families.

I was privileged to know this family for almost three years at Brewster Middle School. Michael was truly a loving husband and father. He was involved in every aspect of his boys lives. It breaks my heart to think about the large void his death will have on his family and friends. He was always friendly and smiling.
As Marine Corps family, you will be missed, brother. God speed!
