Mr. Kitchens honorably served his country in World War II as an Army scout in the Pacific Campaign, earning the Silver Star for outstanding bravery in combat. He remained a loyal patriot to his country all his life. Mr. Kitchens was a farmer and water-well driller. He actively participated in his community with many years of service through the Soil Conservation Association, Farmers Federation Committee, Surface Mining Reclamation, Parrish Lions Club, Alabama Forestry Service, and Alabama Dairyman’s Association. He was also a life-long participant in Sacred Harp Singing. He was an active dedicated member and deacon of Zion Rest Primitive Baptist Church, for 73 years. For anyone who met Charles Kitchens, especially those who were in his company frequently, it was well known that his greatest love was sharing the wonders of the Savior Jesus Christ in the events of his long and blessed life, and the treasures of God’s Holy Word. His personal desire was that all God’s people give all glory and honor to Jesus Christ alone for the blessings of daily life and eternal salvation. After his experiences in WWII, his desire was to share what Christ has done for us, what Christ is doing for us, what Christ will do for us, and what we should do about it, with all we meet. After he was 80 years old he memorized yet another scripture, II Timothy 1:8-14, which begins:”Be not thou therefore ashamed of the testimony of our Lord….” Mr. Kitchens was not ashamed. He will be fondly missed. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to Zion Rest Primitive Baptist Church, 1304 Viking Drive Jasper, AL 35501.
