Family will receive friends on Friday, September 2, 2022, from 6 until 8 p.m. at Kilgore Green Funeral Home. Funeral service will be held on Saturday, September 3, 2022, at 1p.m., at First United Methodist Church of Jasper. Interment immediately following at Enon Baptist Cemetery in Lynn. Alan Beasley will officiate.
Donald was born to Beatrice Cox and Thomas A. Janes Jr. and grew up in Piggott, Arkansas. He later attended and graduated from the University of Missouri with a degree in Forestry and was a member of the Alpha Gamma Rho Fraternity. After serving his country in the Navy, he started a family and developed his career in Forestry while in Columbia, Missouri. After several years he moved his family to Georgia where he served as a Professor of Forestry at the University of Georgia. After his time at UGA, he moved to Auburn University and taught forestry where he also developed new skills in computer programming.
After that, Donald and his family moved to Jasper, Alabama, where he worked for Drummond Company, Inc. for 11 years as Senior Systems Analyst. He was also working part-time as a professor at Walker College, teaching math and computer science, eventually moving into this role full-time for 13 years and retiring in 2003 at the age of 70. Throughout his life, Donald's hobbies and passions were reading, soaring, computer programming, and the outdoors. Donald was a member at First United Methodist Church in Jasper where he worked with the children's department teaching bible study on computers.
Donald was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas A. Janes Jr, and Beatrice Cox; first wife, Marilynn Gunn Janes; sons, David Janes and Brian Janes; sister, Anna Claire; brothers, Bruce Janes, Robert Janes, and Tommy Janes; and grandson, Wade Hampton Workmaster Janes.
Donald is survived by his wife of almost 31 years, Brenda Gail Ward Janes; sons, Donald Charles “Chuck” Janes (Candy), Douglas Ethan Janes (Julie) and Russell Thomas “Rusty” Janes (Tecia); grandchildren, Charles Janes (Ashley), Rachel Stewart (Kyler), Mackenzie Janes, Heidi Lindsey, Jennifer Tatum (Jerom), Amanda Fleming (Brandon), Matthew Janes (Delaney), and Olivia Janes; great-grandchildren, Elisabeth Tatum, David Noles, Celeste Fleming, Meadow Fleming, Carter Stewart, Austin Stewart, Sophia Brown, Aiden Brown, Savannah Lindsey, Shelby Lindsey, Scarlette Lindsey and Seth Lindsey; sister, Rosemary Janes and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.
In lieu of flowers, the family request donations be made to the First United Methodist Men’s Scholarship fund via First United Methodist Church of Jasper.
