July 10,1964- July 6, 2026
George English Lum, IV, 61 of Jasper died at his home on Monday, July 6.
A wonderful husband, father, grandfather and friend, George was known for his incisive mind, quick wit, warm personality and contagious laugh that always made others—old and new friends alike -- feel welcome.
George was a 1982 graduate of Walker (now Jasper) High School, where he won the school’s prestigious Geddes Self Award, the most prestigious honor given to a Walker High football player. He was a member of Walker’s 1981 state championship golf team, which was later inducted into the Walker High Sports Hall of Fame.
George and his son Reed were only the second father/son recipients of the Geddes Self Award in the history of the honor.
George then went on to the University of Alabama, where he earned a degree in Electrical Engineering and was a member of Pi Kappa Alpha social fraternity. He then went on to a successful 32-year career at the Southern Company.
George was a faithful member of The First Baptist Church of Jasper, where he coached in the Upward Basketball youth ministry for 13 years.
He loved all sports, especially water skiing on Smith Lake, golf at Musgrove Country Club and of course, his beloved Alabama Crimson Tide. No one loved the lake more than George, where he helped make every event, even rainy days, memorable celebrations on the water.
He was preceded in death by his parents, longtime Jasper businessman James G. “Tuck” Lum and Amelia Frost Lum, and his father-in-law, Rufus Reed.
George is survived by his wife, Angie Reed Lum; a son, Reed English Lum and his wife Alyssa; a granddaughter, Elizabeth Grace Lum; sister Elizabeth Lum Richardson and brothers in law George A. “Rusty” Richardson, all of Jasper and Greg Reed and wife Mitsy of Jasper. He was also survived by his mother-in-law, Patsy Reed of Jasper, as well as his nephews, Andrew Reed, James Reed (Annika) and John Michael Reed (Kalei).
Like his parents, George had the gift of hospitality. He was a man of integrity and kindness who enriched the lives of all who knew him with love, laughter and joy.
As the apostle Paul wrote in I Thessalonians, we grieve, but not as those who are without hope. Our faith, that same faith that George had, means that we will see him again.
Visitation will be held at Jasper’s First Baptist Church, 1604 Fourth Ave. South from 12:30 p.m. to 2 p.m., followed by the funeral service at 2 p.m., Saturday. July 11. Burial will follow the service at Oak Hill Cemetery. The Rev. Andy Frazier will officiate.
Pallbearers will be Rob East, Steve Gillott, Donnie Jones, Denny Key, Wayne Myers, Terry Odom, Dr. Wade O’Mary, Wayne Rector, Hugh Smith, Jud Spano, Tony Sparks, Phillip Studdard, Wayne Tedford, Larry J. Uptain and John Whitcomb, as well as honorary pallbearer Paul South.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions in George’s memory be made to Walker Area Community Foundation, First Baptist Church of Jasper, First Presbyterian Church of Jasper (PCA), or the charity of your choice.
