Hubert Ivan “Sonny” Chisolm, age 91, of Jasper, AL passed away peacefully on June 21, 2026. He was born on April 3, 1935, in Meridian, MS where he spent his youth hunting, fishing, playing the guitar, and helping his dad at the family car dealership. His love for hunting, fishing and guitar continued throughout his life as did his knack for trading automobiles.
Ivan went on to earn his bachelor’s degree from the University of Southern Mississippi and then served in the United States Navy as a lieutenant. After his military service, Ivan earned a master’s degree from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, KY, where he met and married the love of his life, Marietta. He later obtained a master’s degree from the University of Alabama in Birmingham.
Ivan enjoyed a long, fulfilling career serving as the Director of Education for several Baptist churches and afterwards at the Alabama State Employment Office in Jasper. If you knew Ivan, you know that his passion was helping others. He was a long-time, faithful member of Jasper’s First Baptist Church where he taught Sunday School for over 50 years. He also served as president of the Walker County Habitat for Humanity and volunteered for Carpenters for Christ and Alabama Baptist Disaster Relief. As a man of few words, Ivan’s kindness and love for Christ was displayed through his actions. If he saw a need, he fulfilled it prayerfully and privately. Though quiet by nature, he was quick to smile and loved sharing a good joke.
Ivan is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Marietta McCauley Chisolm; his children, Benjamin I. Chisolm (Jamie) and Katrina Morris (Bill); nine grandchildren, Harry Lane, Spencer Lane, Sophia Lane, Ben Chisolm II, Ben Morris, Keri Morris, Lauren Tucker, Carmen Tucker and Katie Clark; and 2 great-grandchildren, Landynn Wilkerson and Hyland Lane. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ivan Clemie and Alta Chisolm of Meridian, MS, and his sisters, Dorothy Harter and Katherine Hester. Ivan also had many cherished friends and a large extended family which he tended with love and grace.
The family would like to thank the staff of the Intermediate Care Unit at Baptist Health Walker Hospital for the kindness and patience you showed during this difficult time. Your compassion and comfort meant the world to us.
