Montae Myrl James Cain, 93, passed away Monday morning May 20, 2019, at University of Alabama at Birmingham Hospital.
Visitation will be Thursday, May 23, 2019, from noon until 2 p.m., with the service to follow at 2 p.m., at First United Methodist Church, with Kilgore-Green Funeral Home directing. Graveside will follow the service at Oak Hill Cemetery. The Rev. Alan Beasley will officiate.
Montae was born to Piercy Nathaniel and Blanch Smith James on May 8, 1926, in Carbon Hill, Alabama. A graduate of Walker County High School in Jasper, Montae went on to attend Huntington College. She earned her bachelor’s degree in English from Birmingham Southern College. Montae began her professional career as a teacher at 19 years of age. She went on to teach at West Jasper Elementary, Central Jr. High School and Walker High School, where she headed the English department for 15 years. She continued her teaching career for 37 years. In June of 1947, she married R.C. Cain. They raised two sons, David and Eric. Later in life after R.C. passed away, Montae married Daniel M. Christoper Jr.
Montae had a passion for her students, literature, needle point and her church choir. She was a member of the United Methodist Woman and served in numerous positions in the United Methodist Church. She was awarded Woman of the Year by Jasper Business and Professional Women’s Club. Montae was a member of the Delta Kappa Gamma Sorority and greatly enjoyed serving her community.
Montae was preceded in death by her husbands, R.C. Cain and Daniel Christopher; and parents, Piercy and Blanch James.
She is survived by her two sons, Dr. David Steven Cain Sr. (Linda) and Eric James Cain Sr.; grandchildren, David Steven Cain Jr. (Stephanie), Christopher Wood Cain (Angie), Sara Megan Cain, Lauren Cain Lingerfelt (Josh) and Eric James Cain Jr.; great-grandchildren; Davis, Noah, Roen, Foley, Brooks, Behrens, Harper, Libby, Maggie and Lucy; and a host of other relatives and friends.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to First United Methodist Church of Jasper or The Walker Area Community Foundation.
