The viewing will be held at Kilgore-Green funeral home in Jasper, Alabama on January 31, at 1:00 with the funeral service beginning at 2:00 p.m. Bill Martin of New Canaan Baptist Church will officiate. Burial will follow shortly after at Oak Hill Cemetery.
Rodney was born in Bibb County on June 29,1944 and moved to Bessemer, Alabama at a young age. He graduated from Bessemer High School in 1962. He and his wife, Brenda, moved to Jasper in 1976, where they lived for 37 years and raised their four children. Rodney carried out his career as an exploration driller for Drummond Company. While in Jasper, he was a member of New Canaan Baptist Church and served for several years as a Sunday school teacher and later as Sunday School Superintendent. For many years he ministered to the boys at the Mitnick Wilderness Program in Walker County, and personally gave bibles to each of the ones that completed the program.
Rodney’s hobbies included gardening, playing golf, watching Auburn football, and most importantly cherishing his time with family and friends. He had a great sense of humor, and was a great storyteller. He was a faithful servant of the Lord and spent his time spreading the gospel, always praying before he ate no matter where he was, reading his many devotional books in the mornings, and devoting himself to his wife and family.
Following the death of his wife in 2008, he married Faye Mitcham Blackerby on April 19, 2013. Following their marriage, Rodney moved back to Bessemer, Alabama and they enjoyed a wonderful marriage for over eleven years.
Rodney is preceded in death by his first wife, Brenda Watson Blackerby, beloved son, Rodney David Blackerby, his father and mother, Glendon Hugh and Ida Mae Blackerby, his brothers Conrad and Gary Blackerby, and sister-in-law Jo Blackerby.
Rodney is survived by his devoted wife, Faye Mitcham Blackerby, daughters Sherri Sparks, Lisa Wells (Jim), Nita Sherer; sister, Glenda Smith, and sister-in-law, Barbara Blackerby. He is also survived by 7 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, his Aunt Kathryn, stepsons, Bryan and Brent Mitcham (Leigh), and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Pallbearers will be Jim Wells, Jesse Wells, Sam Wells, Mike Burchfield, Drew Hendrix, and Brian Smith. Honorary Pallbearers will be Mattison Sherer and Aiden Ferrell.
