Family will receive friends on Wednesday, June 9, 2021, from 11a.m. until 1 p.m., at Mt. Vernon Baptist Church with Kilgore-Green Funeral Home directing, the funeral will follow at Mt. Vernon Baptist Church at 1:00 p.m., with interment at Curry Cemetery. Dr. John Gates will officiate.
She loved her Lord and faithfully served Him at Mt. Vernon by playing the piano for 38 years as well as singing in the choir and many other places of service. Her love of music continued as she sang in Handel's Messiah for over 25 years and served on the Board for many years. She expressed her love of people and her Lord on 17 medical/evangelistic mission trips to Honduras and used her organizational skills as team leader for 12 of those. As financial secretary of Ala-Honduras Medical Educational Network (AHMEN) she contributed to the success of many other mission trips. She did all this while raising a family and teaching public school for 29 years, mostly at Curry schools.
Sharon was a loving wife, mother and grandmother with a passion for cooking and knitting. She also loved her dogs, her birds and Auburn football. She was greatly loved and will be greatly missed, but she has finished her battle with Covid and is at rest with Jesus.
She was preceded in death by her father and mother, Jack and Cleo Carney Thomas; and her brother James Thomas of Birmingham.
She is survived by her loving husband of 44 years, Richard Bowie; sons, Jonathan Bowie (Kendra) and Jason Bowie (Miranda); grandchildren, Jonah Bowie, Berit Bowie and Evangeline Bowie; sister-in-law, Grace Thomas and several aunts, nieces, and nephews with a host of friends.
Pallbearers will be members of the Adult 2 Sunday School Class at Mt. Vernon.
