Vonnie Thompson

Vonnie Thompson, age 79, of Oakman, Alabama, passed away peacefully at UAB Hospital in Birmingham on July 31, 2025. She was a devoted member of Oakman Freewill Baptist Church and lived a life full of faith, love, and dedication to her family and community.

The family will be receiving friends on Tuesday, August 5, 2025, from 6 until 8 p.m., at Kilgore-Green Funeral Home. Funeral service will be held on Wednesday, August 6, 2025, at 12 p.m., in the Kilgore-Green Chapel, with burial at Walker Memory Gardens. Johnny Martin will officiate.

Born on February 21, 1946, Vonnie came from a large, close-knit family that deeply influenced her values and life. She was one of ten siblings, each of whom she loved dearly, and family was at the very core of who she was. As a mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, she passed down the importance of family bonds. Vonnie made it a priority to host large family reunions, bringing together not only her siblings but also a host of nieces, nephews, and extended family. These gatherings were full of laughter, memories, and the love that Vonnie cultivated so generously.

In her early career, Vonnie was an accomplished beautician in Carbon Hill, before moving to Birmingham where she worked alongside her mother-in-law. She later became an insurance agent and co-owner of Brazil Insurance Agency in Bessemer, Alabama with her husband Carl Thompson.

Vonnie had a passion for softball that brought her immense joy and connected her with her friends who she would treat like family in such a special way. Whether playing alongside her daughter Connie, traveling the South supporting her daughter Angela, or cheering for her granddaughter Ila Kate, softball was a highlight of her life.

She is survived by her children, Connie Colbert (Dave), Ken Farris (Rhonda), and Angela Martin (Jeremy); her grandchildren, Emily Colbert, Daniel Colbert, Madison Martin, and Ila Kate Martin; and her great-grandchildren, Blakely, Kendall, and Charli Colbert. Vonnie was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Carl Thompson; her parents, Jim Lee and Doshie Warren Naramore; and her siblings, Willo, Louie, Troy, Preston, Grant, Alene, Estee, Margie, and Olivia.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Oakman High School Softball in Vonnie’s memory. She loved her softball girls.
