When I think back about my youth and the older women who influenced my life, I always think about Ayelene. Her quick, feisty manner; outspokenness and confidence made members of my own family seem like pale ghosts. The gusto with which she grabbed onto life, and never let go! What a joy it was to spend time with her and her sense of humor, that lasted right till the end. The courage to be like her, especially when my days are growing short, is my great hope.
