Originally from Woodland, California, and an avid beach-loving surfer, Richard served in the United States Army from 1965-1968. During his time in the service, he was stationed in Fort Myer in Arlington, Virgina, where he served with the Old Guard at the Arlington National Cemetery. While serving in Arlington, Richard met Bonnie Schulmeister where he kindly offered to buy her a hamburger. This chance encounter led to a love that would last nearly six decades. They would have celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on April 16, 2026.
Richard—known as “Poppie” to those closest to him—worked for U.S. Airways in Pittsburgh, Pa., for 37 years. He was a former Scout Master for Troop 1168 of Rices Landing, Pa., where he received his Wood Badge while serving as Scout Master. In his retirement, he enjoyed fishing, bird watching, watching old cowboy movies, reading, Sudoku, and playing video games.
His greatest love was his family. He enjoyed researching genealogy and always had a story to tell about the family line.
He is survived by his wife Bonnie Sutphin; a daughter Kathryn (Donnie) Cochran of Rices Landing, a son Rick (Erin) Sutphin of Fort Mill, S.C., granddaughters, Molly Cochran (Riley) Robey of Phoenix, Md., Quin Sutphin (fiancée, Dillion Howie) of Rock Hill, S.C., and great-grandchildren, Miles and Rohan Robey of Phoenix, Md.
Deceased are his parents Margarette and William Sutphin and brother Buzz Sutphin of California, mother-in-law Anna Schulmeister of Rices Landing, Pa., and granddaughter Angel Sutphin.
Richard loved his fur grandbabies including Oakley, Micha, Shea, Tilly, Maggie, and Marlow.
The family would like to offer a special thanks to Dr. “Josh” Sysak with TMA Primary Care Physicians Group and Dr. Chadha and staff with Select Specialty Hospital, Mon General Hospital, Morgantown, WV.
The love for his family and his community was ever present throughout his life. In his giving spirit, Richard will donate his pacemaker to a canine cardiac patient in need.
