William Selden Barbor
May 12, 1934 – May 13, 2022

William Selden Barbor, 88 of Rices Landing (Dry Tavern), died Friday, May 13, 2022.
He was born May 12, 1939 in Wilmerding, a son of the late Verner L. and Edith Davis Barbor.
Selden’s grandparents, William Selden Davis, his wife Cora and three-month-old Edith were survivors of the 1889 Johnstown Flood.
He was a graduate of the Art Institute of Pittsburgh, Indiana State College, Masters Degree in Education, studied drawing at Carnegie Tech (now CMU) and calligraphy with Arnold Bank, one of three world renowned calligraphers. Three charcoal drawings of Selden’s are in the Permanent Collection at Carnegie Tech. Also a lettering artist at Seiferths and created hand lettered charts for Washington Corp.
Noted art educator for 32 years, including Pittsburgh, McKeesport and Laurel Highlands. Where the PA Department of Education “declared the art program and courses of study to be outstanding and the role model for art curriculum development” in the state of Pennsylvania.
Selden was a writer, display artist/designer, designer of garden devices and unique methods of gardening.
On June 28, 1969 he married Helen Ann Cwierz, who died August 3, 2018.
In 1971, Selden designed a house for his beautiful bride, their love made a house a home for 47 years in Dry Tavern.
Surviving is a sister, Edith Petrocelli.
Deceased are two brothers V.L. Barbor Jr., Delmont Barbor; and a sister, Corabel Bush.
Per Selden’s request there will be no public viewing; a Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, May 17, 2022 at 11:00 am at St. Marcellus Worship Site of St. Matthias Parish, Jefferson Rd., Jefferson, PA 15344, with Fr. J. Francis Frazer, celebrant. Interment will be private. Condolences may be expressed online at www.behm-funeralhomes.com.
