Charles Morris Gray, 8/9/20-12/22/17, born to Howard and Nellie P.(Wilson) Gray. Charlie was Pre-deceased by his sister Helen MacQuarrie. He is survived by his wife of 68 years Ruth E. (Unwin) Gray and Children Timothy Wilson and Allison Reeves Gray. He was appreciated by his nieces, nephews, their children and many friends.
Charlie was raised around Greenfield Hill and Fairfield Beach, CT. He attended 1st grade in Coral Gables, FL where his father had built some home sand finished grade school at Timothy Dwight which then was alongside of Greenfield Hill Congregational Church. He graduated from Roger Ludlowe High and was an avid member of the Sea Scouts in Southport, CT. While at U.Conn. He joined the Navy and after training at Columbia U. he shipped out as Lieutenant J.G. aboard the USS Arcturus AKA1, operating landing craft in North Africa, Europe as well as the “smoke boat” in the Pacific during Kamikaze attacks.
At war’s end he finished his business degree at U. Conn. After building a few homes he got a “regular job” to support his family in the home he built on the Warner estate. Charlie was a Tax assessor for the town of Fairfield, then went to work for the Mechanics & Farmers Savings Bank in Bridgeport, CT. He retired in 1982 as V>P> Chief Residential Appraiser AKA “the farmer” of M& F Bank. He continued in Real Estate appraisal for some years.
Mostly Charlie will be remembered as a wonderful father and friend. He sold Aqua Cats so his family could sail. He built an ice boat and commuted from Candlewood Lake one summer so we could experience fresh water fun in addition to our summers at Fairfield Beach and trips from Maine to Miami. He built a barn in the backyard so his daughter could have a horse and bought and winterized a house in Ludlow, VT despite being a non-skier.
While wintering in the moving to Jensen Beach he volunteered at Martin Memorial Hospital for 15 years and learned to like golf. At age 91 he was “extraordinarily fit physically and mentally”. A medical mistake caused great harm and he was never the same. He will be remembered as the wise can and will do person he always had been. To some around Rio he was the guy always riding his bicycle.
Charlie’s family thanks Anchor HHS for their compassionate care, Treasure Coast Hospice and all those who have helped these past few months.
A memorial in his honor will be announced the spring.
