Helga Overhoff Schlichter of Port Saint Lucie, FL passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 30, 2014. Helga was born December 17, 1918, in Mettmann, Germany. Her husbands Dr. Harmen Lehment and Robert J. Schlichter predeceased her in 1944 and 2002, respectively. She is survived by her son, Ralph Schlichter and his wife Judy, of Wilmington, NC. She has five grandchildren, Mary Frances Callahan, Sara Schlichter,
Dr. Susannah Aylesworth, Dr. R. Alexander Schichter, and Captain T. Schuyler Schlichter, USA; five great grandchildren, Cayla and Susannah Rogers, Sarah and Louisa Aylesworth, and Harry Callahan; and one great-great grandchild, Mason Harper.
Helga attended public school in Mettmann, Germany, and attended Wittgenstein Women’s College in Berleburg, Germany.
Helga married her first husband Harmen, a German Army surgeon, in 1942. He was killed in action in 1944. She emigrated to the United States in 1947, and married her second husband Robert later that year. She lived in Fishkill, NY, Memphis and Nashville, TN, and Madeira Beach, FL. She moved to Fort Pierce, FL in 1957, and later moved as one of the original residents in Tarpon Bay Yacht Club in Port Saint Lucie, FL in 1980. She was a faithful and giving member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Fort Pierce.
Helga enjoyed gardening at homes she planned in Fort Pierce and Seven Devils, NC. She also enjoyed art, painting, and classical music. With Robert she kept an active social life at Tarpon Bay which included frequent clubhouse events, boating and fishing. She was a charter member of the Tarpon Bay Water Lilies, with one of the water aerobic exercises named for her. She became an avid and successful bridge player. After Robert’s retirement, she enjoyed cruises and trips to China, Singapore, Hong Kong, Japan, New Zealand, Australia, Egypt, Turkey, Greece, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Italy, Norway, Sweden, England and Scotland, Casablanca, Mexico, Hawaii, the Amazon, and several Caribbean Islands.
A celebration of Helga’s life will be held at the Aycock Funeral Home, 950 NE Jensen Beach Blvd, Jensen Beach, FL, at 1:30 PM on Tuesday, April 8, 2014. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Trinity Lutheran Church, 2011 S. 13th Street, Fort Pierce, FL 34950, or to Treasure Coast Hospice, 5000 Dunn Road, Fort Pierce, FL 34981.
