

Johnson Michael Afong, age 83, passed away peacefully on Thursday, January 6, 2022, following a lengthy and brave battle with Parkinson’s disease. Johnson was born in Trinidad on August 25, 1938 to Henry and Mary Afong. He enjoyed spending time with family and friends, eating flavorful Caribbean food, and dancing the night away to Calypso.
In 1982, he and his family moved to Fort Lauderdale where he had many successful business endeavors. Not only was he a hard-working businessman, but he also spent countless hours giving back to his community. He was an active member of the Knights of Columbus and he sang in the choir at St. Gregory Catholic Church. A dedicated member of the Chinese Cultural Association in Miami, he spent many hours volunteering and helping to plan the yearly Chinese New Year celebration. It was a monumentally successful event that he was so proud to be a part of.
He loved his family and friends immensely. He always encouraged his 5 grandchildren by praising their efforts and achievements. He taught them the importance of hard work, diligence, and always striving to do better. He never turned down good conversation or a bowl of ice cream. He brightened the room wherever he went with his loving demeanor and hearty chuckle. He will be greatly missed.
Johnson, also belovedly known as Sang to many, was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Mary Afong, his brother Edwin Afong, and his sister Fong Kam Chun. He is survived by his loving wife Ruby Afong; daughter Dawne Ragland (Doug); son Anthony Afong (Lawna); five grandchildren, Grace Ragland, Connor Ragland, Jack Ragland, Abigail Afong, and Alexia Afong; and 3 sisters, Ann Chin Lee, Grace Wai Chan Tai Chew, and Teresa Hong Quan Johnson-Attin.
A celebration of life will be held on January 22nd from 2-4pm at Aycock Funeral Home 950 NE Jensen Beach Blvd, Jensen Beach, FL 34957. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in his name to the Parkinson’s Foundation or the Chinese Cultural Association in Miami.
