Jorge Luis Lao, 78. Resident of Jensen Beach died on July 5th at HCA Longwood Hospital. Jorge was born on March 23, 1946, in Guayama, Puerto Rico to Francisco Lao-Westerband and Maria Ricela Gonzalez-Vazquez. He was the fourth son of their five children. At the age of five Jorge’s father passed away leaving his mother to move to New York City with her five children to be close to her brothers who were living there. Jorge was surrounded by many loving cousins, made many lifelong friends from the neighborhood, during his school years, and in the military all which became his second family. He met his first wife Miriam Casiano in 1966 and were married 1968 until they divorced in 1976. They had a daughter and a son. He met his second wife, Laura Velazquez, in 1989 through mutual friends. They wed in 1991 and remained married for 33-years until his death. Jorge attended PS 125 on 123rd Street Morningside Drive, JHS 43 graduated in 1962, and George Washington High School graduated in 1965. He enlisted in the Air Force during the Vietnam War, proudly serving from 1965-1969, and became a Sergeant at that time . After his enlistment he joined the Army National Guard to continue to serve our nation until 1992. Jorge also went to Manhattan College 1971-1973 to obtain his Associates and began his employment at Presbyterian Hospital 1969-1973. He worked at the Department of Social Services 1973-1978, and then the Department of Corrections Rikers Island in Queens New York from 1978 till his retirement in 2001. During his employment he was promoted to Captain and received a medal for 10 years of service. While he was employed at Rikers he returned to school to obtain his Bachelor of Science from John Jay College of Criminal Justice in 1994. After retired from Rikers in 2001 he returned to college to obtain his Associates of Culinary, which was a dream of his to become a Chef. He graduated from Sullivan County Community College in 2000. He was than employed at Volunteers of America Camp LaGuardia, cooking for the homeless shelter until he retired in 2006. Jorge was a sports enthusiast; his favorite teams were the Mets for baseball and the Jets for football. His hobbies and enjoyments were fishing, cooking, camping, drawing and painting still life, taking walks, going to the casino and he especially loved spending time with family and friends. He is survived by his wife Laura E. Velazquez-Lao, his children Adina Lao-Segarra and Joseph Segarra, Eric Lao and Christine Wagner-Lao, Stepson Felipe Morales and Wendy Sanchez-Morales, grandchildren: Justin Lao-Segarra and Jenna Lao-Segarra, Ashley Segarra-Cale and Matthew Cale, Zavier Morales, Diego Morales, Marco Morales, Alyana Morales, Gabriel Morales and great-grandson Kai Louis Lao-Segarra, brothers Francisco Lao-Gonzalez, Jamie Arnoldo Lao-Gonzalez and sister Rosa Maria Lao-Gonzalez. He is Predeceased by his older brother Carlos Fermin Lao-Gonzalez, April 21, 2022. He will be buried at South Florida national Cemetery in Wellington FL on July 17, 2024. “May The work I Have Done Speak for Me”
A visitation for Jorge will be held Tuesday, July 9, 2024 from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM at Aycock Funeral Home, 1504 Southeast Floresta Drive, Port St. Lucie, FL 34983. A visitation will occur Tuesday, July 9, 2024 from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM. A reception will occur Tuesday, July 9, 2024 from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM, 1504 SE Floresta Drive, Port St. Lucie, FL 34983. A graveside service will occur Wednesday, July 17, 2024 from 2:00 PM to 2:15 PM at South Florida National Cemetery, 6501 FL-7, Wellington, FL 33449.
