Joseph Reed Smith, 69, of Jensen Beach passed away February 21, 2014 at Treasure Coast Hospice in Stuart. Born in Washington, D. C. he moved to Jensen Beach in 2009 from Fredericksburg, Va.

Reed worked as a Liability Claims Examiner, then Liability Claims Trainer for GEICO. After retiring from GEICO, he worked with sight impaired students from Elementary to Middle in the Stafford County, Va. School System and taught himself Braille.

Warmer weather and family called him back to Florida where he had lived as a teenager. He then began his new career of volunteer service. Reed gave several presentations on Braille for the Sight Impaired to Jensen Beach Elementary School children, helped The Salvation Army in many ways, and became the volunteer “Maintenance Dept.” for the SafeSpace shelter in Stuart for victims of domestic violence. This “job” required repairing all of the broken red high heels worn by men at each October’s “Walk a Mile in Her Shoes”. He was the 2011 SafeSpace Volunteer of the year for Martin County.

Reed was 2012-2013 Rotarian of the Year for the Stuart Rotary and enjoyed working with teenagers in RYLA. He so loved children and was working on a new project involving Finance matters for The Boys & Girls Club when he became ill.

He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Joan Christine and daughter’s Carol Dols and Christine Totten; grandsons Stephen Mears, Tyler Lefebvre, Jesse Joynt; granddaughter Shannon Horwath; great-grandson Daniel Weber; sisters Sharon Garvin, Judy Pruett, Regina Smith, Leanna Minch, Jamie Disterhaupt; and brothers Edward F. Smith, E. Reed Smith; and stepmother Jamie Smith.

There will be a visitation gathering at the Aycock Funeral Home, 950 NE Jensen Beach Blvd., Jensen Beach, FL 34957 on Tuesday, February 25, 2014 from 4-7 PM.

Christy, so sorry for your loss. Our thoughts are with you and your family. Rick was fondly reminiscing about Reed and some of their antics so many years ago.

Joan/Toots,
I'm still in shock! I don't have to tell you how good a 'guy' "J". Reed was. I had the pleasure of meeting him, through Jim Nock, when we were in grade school at Blessed Sacrament (back in the 50's). I could go on for days with all the fun times and great things that we did and HE made them even better! I can still see and hear his jaunty laughter and the sparkle in Reed's eyes when he was talking or explaining something. His 'wings' will live on in infamy. I STILL have 'that garlic' that you gave me from that house. It comes up every year, in my garden. Guess I'll have 'garlic reed' to see and enjoy for years to come! Those wonderful times at the Fredericksberg house, watching the Cowboys and Skins games. The deck BBQ's and your wonderful Christmas 'cards' pictures of the river!!! Reed is one that WILL live on in our hearts, especially mine!

Love,

Jim

I am so sorry to hear of Reed's passing. I had the privilege of working with him at Ferry Farm. He was an inspiration - so wonderful with our students and always so positive. May God give you peace and comfort during this time. Peggy Scott (FFES, Stafford, VA)

I am so sorry for your loss. Reed would stop by Stafford County Public School's Student Services Dept. from time to time on business. Reed always had such a Big Infectious Smile that was only rivaled by the Twinkle in his Eyes. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

I am so sorry for your loss. Reed worked at Drew Middle School in Stafford Virginia when we housed the visually impaired program. He was quite the gentleman and was an asset to that program. He brought joy to the school.
He was very well liked by all.

I am so very sorry to hear of Reed's passing. I was privileged to know him when I taught at Ferry Farm Elementary in Stafford. He was always so happy, so kind, so friendly, so gentlemanly--everyone loved him! He has left this world a better place because of all the good things he did ! My deepest sympathies.

A light has gone out in the world. Reed was one of the best people I have ever been privileged to know. Working with him and Joan was an amazing experience. Both of them gave all of themselves for every project they took on... and they took on everything! Dear Reed, may the good Lord bless and keep you until we meet again.

Joan, we will surely miss reed's smiling face as he talks of the "red high heels",
We were so fortunate to have been part of his life here in Stuart!
