Margaret Guthlein

Margaret Rose Guthlein, age 93, passed away peacefully in her home in Stuart, Florida on June 21. She was born to J. Berry and Mae Coughlin (née Moroney) on June 17, 1933 in Brooklyn, where she grew up with her older sister, Marijane. Margaret graduated from St. Xavier High School and received her BA in English from St. Elizabeth’s College. She married John F. Kiley in 1955 and they had two beautiful daughters, Therese and Rebecca.

Margaret started her career as a public school teacher in the NYC school system and later worked for the Nassau County Department of Social Services. Margaret obtained a Masters in Social Work from Adelphi University. She continued her dedication to public service, rising to the position of Director of Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation for Nassau County.

She later married John “Jack” Guthlein becoming stepmother to Elizabeth, James, Susan, Peter, Kate and Margo. Margaret and Jack enjoyed a nearly 40-year marriage, sharing a love of golf, bridge, and spending time with friends. Margaret was also a lifelong tennis player and continued her commitment to physical fitness into her 90s.

Margaret is survived by two adoring daughters, Therese (Roger) Kahn and Rebecca (Jim) Conboy, cherished grandchildren Amanda (Jovi) and Charlotte (Shari) Kahn, and Madeline, Laura (Marc), and Jimmy Conboy and great grandson Marlon. Margaret is also survived by five beloved stepchildren, Liz, Susan (Nick), Pete (Frederico), Kate (Gerard), and Margo, step-grandchildren, and step-greatgrandchildren, along with many nieces, nephews, friends, and caretakers, especially Lakisha Powell.

Funeral arrangements will be made by her daughters. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Planned Parenthood.
