Joan Curtis Back, 83, of Johnson City, Tennessee, passed away at her home on Tuesday, October 20, 2026.
Born on September 13, 1943, Joan was the daughter of the late Raymond “Nip” and Madge Curtis. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, John D. Back, and her great-grandson, Dylan Back.
Joan had a heart full of love for her family and just enough sass to keep everyone on their toes.
Joan loved to cook and bake, and no one ever visited her home without being offered something to eat. Whether she had spent the day in the kitchen or simply had something waiting on the counter, she always made sure everyone was fed. It was one of the many ways she showed her love, and something her family will always remember fondly.
Joan is survived by her children, Greg Back (Jan), Alan Back, John D. Back Jr., and Elizabeth Smith; her grandchildren, Daniel Back (Danielle), Jessi Morris (Frankie), Logan Back (Lindsey), Josh Smith, Brianna Still (Bobby), Beth McClain (Adam), and Jude Hickman; and her great-grandchildren, Dawson Back, Daxton Back, Lexi Morris, Samuel Morris, Riley Still, Lincoln Still, and Paisley McClain.
Although her family will miss her dearly, they find comfort in knowing she is reunited with her beloved husband, John, and her precious great-grandson, Dylan. And knowing Joan, she’s probably already put John to work building her a pavilion to sit under.
Joan’s family would also like to recognize her special friends, Jamie Soloman and Renee Ray, for the friendship, care, and support they provided her. Their kindness meant so much to Joan and her family.
The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to the nurses and staff of Amedisys Hospice for the compassionate care, kindness, and support they provided Joan and her family during her final days.
Visitation will be held at Monte Vista Funeral Home, 1900 E Oakland Avenue, Johnson City, Tennessee 37601, on October 24, 2026, from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm, followed by a Celebration of Life, officiated by Kenneth Chatman at 7:00 pm.
A Graveside Committal Service will take place at Mountain Home National Cemetery on October 26, 2026, at 10:00 am, with interment at Mountain Home National Cemetery, 215 Heroes Drive, Mountain Home. (Johnson City, Tennessee)
Pallbearers will be Greg Back, Daniel Back, Logan Back, Frankie Morris, John D Back, and David Rupert, with honorary pallbearers Alan Back, Dawson Back, Daxton Back, Samuel Morris, and Lexi Morris.
