Kathryn "Kathy" Jean Sample
March 21, 1935 – January 31, 2020
I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith: Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing. 2 Timothy 4:7-8
Kathryn “Kathy” Jean Sample, age 84, of Johnson City, Tennessee, passed away on Friday, January 31, 2020 at Cornerstone Village of Johnson City, TN. She was born in Prestonsburg, Kentucky, a daughter of the late Bradie Shepherd and Willie Mae Blackburn Shepherd. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Howard D. Sample, Sr.; and one granddaughter, Nora Sample.
Kathryn was a Christian and a member of the Assemblies of God. She was a retired assembly line worker from General Motors in Rochester, NY. She loved spending time with her family, listening to music of all genres, especially Elvis Presley, Dean Martin, and Kenny Rogers. She also loved Christian music, especially Carman and Michael Combs. She was an avid reader, loved to take walks and going shopping. Kathryn was an incredibly strong woman, but tender and compassionate to everyone she met. She loved Jesus, her family, her friends and Elvis quite fiercely. She was an animated storyteller, and a beautiful soul who brought love and joy to everyone she met. She loved children and worked in church nurseries and taught Sunday school for many years. She loved her sweets and coffee. Kathryn had a beautiful smile and sweet spirit, which will be missed by all. We know she is with her Jesus enjoying her Heavenly home and waiting for us to join her there.

Sample, Jr., and Mark Sample and wife Lauren; five grandchildren, Rebecca Hope and husband Michael, Jillian Rogers and husband Melvin, Erica Summers and husband Nathan, Nathaniel and Audrey Sample; six great grandchildren, Hannah and Zachariah Hope, Gary, Joelle and Camille Rogers, and Jacob Summers; three sisters, Madge Marcello, Edna Robinson, and Lydia Hackworth; special aunt, Josephine Steffens; and several nieces and nephews.

I knew Kathy as the special aunt of one of my closest friends growing up, Kathy (Marcello) Trivigno. Kathy was always a sweet, caring Christian lady. I was blessed to know her and her family.
I will be praying for Naomi, Madge, Kathy and the entire family.

I met Kathy at church along with her daughter, Naomi, and granddaughters, after my family moved to Kingsport from New York... I remember when she wished me a happy birthday (unprompted and apparently just remembering the date from the year before). And that simple act made me finally feel like I was home in Tennessee... Just a small anecdote to try to say just how much of an amazing and kind-hearted person Kathy truly was. Thankfully, she instilled that same kindness and compassion into her children and grandchildren, and I am so, so thankful to have them be a part of my life. Her legacy of unconditional love, compassion, and devotion to Christ live on through her family. I cannot thank God enough for giving me the opportunity to know her and her family, and to be connected to such a person by her granddaughter and my sister-in-law, Erica, who embodies the truly loving spirit of her grandmother entirely.
I hope her family finds peace in that she is finally at peace and with her heavenly father.

Kathy was a precious lady. I will always remember her laughter, smiles, and hugs. We had a great time at church functions, and trips. Kathy was always giving encouragement, smiles, and hugs. She was always there when we needed her. Kathy, I know you are in your Heavenly home. You will always be missed. We will always love you. My prayers are with your family during this time. I am so glad we crossed paths. You were a wonderful lady. I will always love, and miss you.

I have so many wonderful memories with Kathy, to name some of my favorites are Missionette and Women's trips, she was always the life of the party, she made the trips so much fun.
i loved watching her praise God, it was so beautiful to see her love for Christ shine through.
She also stood her ground on things, and i remember thinking, I would love to be so sweet like her and yet tough when I needed to be.
I also remember her roller skating, she had no fear.
I lost my daddy to Alzheimer's and now my mother is in the early stages of this horrible disease.
I love you all very much, my heart and prayers are with you all.

I always remember how patient Kathy was with kids. She had such a gentle spirit and when you talked to her she listened like what you said was important. She always made me feel special. When I think of her I remember that beautiful sweet smile and the kindest eyes. Her Godly example and her unconditional love will never be forgotten.
