Michael Scott Howell

Michael S. “Mike” Howell, age 84, of Unicoi, Tennessee, passed away following a prolonged illness on Wednesday, September 23, 2026, at the Center on Aging and Health in Erwin. A lifelong resident of Unicoi for most of his life, Mike was the son of the late Lester F. and Ethel Vance Howell.

Mike proudly served in the United States Air Force, stationed in Germany and Turkey. Following his military service, he began a long career with the Clinchfield Railroad, where he worked for more than 30 years before retiring as a locomotive engineer. His years on the railroad were marked by steady dedication, hard work, and a strong sense of responsibility.

A faithful believer, Mike valued his relationship with God and carried a quiet conviction and gratitude for the life he had been given. He found great enjoyment in the simple pleasures of life, especially spending time outdoors, traveling, watching the wildlife that visited his property, and feeding the many animals he encountered along the way.

Mike was an avid golfer and formed many lasting friendships through the sport he loved. He also enjoyed spending time on his, at times, ill-fated houseboat on South Holston Lake. His dogs held a special place in his heart, affectionately calling them his “Puppy girls.”

Above all, Mike loved his wife and boys and took tremendous pride in his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Family was important to him, and he held those he loved close both in word and in deed.

Mike was preceded in death by his parents, Lester and Ethel Howell; his brother, Robert “Bob” Howell; and his sister-in-law, Donna Howell.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of 25 years, Robin Howell; two sons, Mark Howell and wife, Anna, of Johnson City, and Matt Howell and wife, Lisa, of Erwin; three grandchildren, Dustin Howell and wife, Brittany, of Chattanooga, Amber Washburn and husband, Tyler, of Denver, North Carolina, and Andrew Howell of Erwin; and five great-grandchildren, Emery Howell, Ila Howell, Brackland Howell, Tatum Washburn, and Everett Washburn. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

The family extends heartfelt appreciation to the nurses and resident aides at the Center on Aging and Health, especially those who were with Mike during his final days. They also express their sincere gratitude to Amedisys Hospice and the home health nurses who cared for him throughout his illness.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Unicoi County Animal Shelter, 185 N. Industrial Drive, Erwin, Tennessee.
