Carl Christian Jooss, age 81, of Utica, Ohio passed away peacefully at home with his wife, Sandy, by his side on June 24, 2025. He is now with his Lord and Savior, Jesus. He was born on April 17, 1944 in Columbus, Ohio to Albert and Ella Jooss. Carl loved and served the Lord, his family, and his country; he had a remarkable and unmatched work ethic.
Carl was the co-captain of Ohio State University’s Rifle Team and a Distinguished Military Graduate. Captain Jooss served honorably in the Army as a Ranger in Vietnam and as a member of the United States Marksmanship Training Unit in Ft. Benning, Georgia. Competing in smallbore rifle shooting most of his life, he won multiple state, national, and international competitions both individually and in team events. He was also recognized as a Century Athlete at OSU. Carl’s love of the sport was evident by his willingness to share, coach, and encourage other shooters. He successfully owned and operated a competition shooting business for over 40 years.
Carl is survived by his best friend and loving wife Sandy, of 59 years, his daughter Jenny Jooss Wielinski, grandchildren Gunnar and Ella, his son Perry (Jill) Jooss, grandchildren Kyle, Nathan, and Grant, sister Judy Wampler, niece Kim, sister in-law, Rena, nephews Darrel, David, Michael and Harley. He is preceded in death by his parents and his daughter, Jody Jooss.
