Dorothy was a 1952 graduate of Johnstown-Monroe High School, where she met her husband, Leland. They were married in 1955, and after Leland finished his service in the Air Force, they settled just outside of Johnstown, where together, they built the home in which they lived for 60 years. Together, they raised four children and taught them the importance of hard work, honesty, dependability, and always striving for excellence. Leland and Dorothy were married for 66 ½ years before his passing in 2021.
When her children were young, Dorothy was a stay-at-home mom who supplemented the family income by making puppets for Lucy’s Toyshop, a local TV program for children. As the children grew, she worked at the Johnstown Bank, and then First National Bank, for several years. She would probably tell you that job she found the most enjoyable was as a tester for DHI, taking and testing milk samples for many dairy farms around Licking and Perry counties before finishing up at Sears, where she retired after 10 years of service.
Dorothy was an accomplished seamstress who enjoyed quilting and made many beautiful clothes for herself and her daughters over the years. However, her true passion was gardening and raising honeybees, sheep, goats, chickens, and a wide variety of other “critters” on the family farm- the more unusual, the better! She was happiest when she was outside, taking a walk, digging in the dirt or working with her animals. Dorothy was an avid researcher and student of animal husbandry, always striving to excel in every new project she took on. Together, she and Leland enjoyed many years working with young people as 4-H advisors, first sharing their expertise in raising honeybees and growing gardens, then adding poultry and small livestock, as the menagerie on their small farm grew. Dorothy also spent several years as a Girl Scout Leader. She was a long-time member of the Appleton United Methodist Church, as well as the Rose Club.
In addition to her parents, Dorothy was preceded in death by a foster son, Charles Neighbor; her brother, Howard Hopkins, and sister, Roberta Etcheverry. She is survived by her daughters Stephanie (Bill) Darling and Melanie (David) Shipley, both of Newark, and her son David (Linda) Hubbell, of Johnstown; 8 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren; brother Mark (Carolotta) Hopkins of Vero Beach, Florida; and sister Mary Hopkins (Al Bigler), of Millersburg, Ohio.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 am on Monday, June 20, 2022 at Crouse-Kauber-Fraley Funeral Home, 225 N Main St, Johnstown, Ohio, with Pastor Bryan Moore officiating. In lieu of calling hours, the family will receive friends and family after the funeral at the Monroe Township Building, 7621 Johnstown-Alexandria Rd, Johnstown, until 4:00.
