M. Eileen Walters

April 7, 1926July 28, 2020

Mary Eileen Walters went peacefully to be with the Lord on July 28th, 2020. Eileen was born at the White Cross Hospital in Columbus, Ohio on April, 7th 1926 to James Monroe and Mary Etta (Primmer) Walters. Eileen grew up in Gallia County on her grandfathers farm near Galliapolis, Ohio where she was a 1944 graduate of Bidwell-Porter school. Eileen worked at the Gallia County Tribune and returned to central Ohio to take a position at the Columbus Dispatch. She proudly let everyone know she was the only woman to work in the Lin-o-type department. She was promoted to proofreader and won many Awards of Excellence and perfect attendance awards before retiring at 80 years old after 42+ years with The Columbus Dispatch. Eileen was also a volunteer in the Sewing Guild at Riverside Methodist Hospital for over 10 years knitting blankets and other things for patients. She took great pride in her service there. Eileen received a Lifetime Donor Award from the American Red Cross where she faithfully donated blood for many, many years. Eileen was an avid gardener, grew many beautiful plants and flowers, always impeccably cared for and mowed her own lawn well into her 80’s. She was an arts and crafts guru and was always busy working on some kind of project for her family or friends, especially knitting us all scarves! Eileen and her sister, Doris, ran an upholstery business together for many years. She loved photography and you would always find her pulling her camera out of her overstuffed purse to take pictures of anything. She was a woman of many talents! Eileen loved the water, although she couldn’t swim. She wasn’t afraid to admit that but would say “I can sure float like a log, though!” She was a faithful member of the Columbus Baptist Temple for over 40 years. She loved hockey and used to often be found taking her son or grandkids to a local game. Eileen was very ornery and was always pulling pranks on people. She had a very wild spirit and was always making jokes and up for a good laugh. Eileen is preceded in death by her brother, Jack, sisters Virginia, Mildred and Ruth, daughter Becki Lynn Walters-Fetherolf and grandson Chad Eric Walters. She is survived by her son James Russel Walters, grandson Anthony Shane (Deborah) Walters, granddaughter Shadow Dawn (Chad) Marohl, great grandchildren Talon, Kyndal, Noah, Erik, Sebastion and Memphis, sister Doris Stone and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. A memorial gathering will be held Thursday August 6, 2020 from 12:00-1:00pm at Crouse-Kauber-Fraley Funeral Home 225 N. Main St. Johnstown, Ohio 43031. Immediately following there will be a memorial service at the funeral home officiated by Pastor Dan McLaughlin. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Mary Eileen Walters name to the American Red Cross or National Alzheimer’s Association.

Worked with Eileen for many of her years at the Dispatch. In fact around 1990 I carpooled with Eileen and Dick Eagan from the Westerville area. Have so many memories of her and work, always kept everyone in line. May she rest in peace. The family has my condolences.
