Dolores Smith

Dolores Smith was born in Drakes Branch, Virginia on January 26, 1928 to Russell and Mabel Walton. She was the youngest of 12 siblings, which all preceded her in death. She made her transition on May 26, 2016.

At a very young age Dolores and her family moved to Bloomfield, New Jersey. She attended elementary school and graduated from Bloomfield High School in 1947. She always spoke proudly of her membership on the gym team. She also cheered loud and proud for Bloomfield High. During her high school years she was known for her sparkling smile, quick wit, and focus on education. She also, joined Abyssinian Baptist Church in Newark NJ, and sang in the choir.

After graduating Dolores went on to complete a certification program in business administration. She then started working as a secretary for the International Ladies Garment Worker’s Union. In 1972, she started working for the Essex County School System as a school aide at 13th Ave elementary school. She was also an active member of the National Council of Negro Women in the 70’s under the leadership of Dorothy Height.

In 1962, Dolores married Walter Kenneth Smith and of this union there are three daughters. Later in 1977, they moved from Newark to South Orange, NJ were they remained until final move to Jonesboro, GA in 1988.

Dolores will always be remembered for her bubbly personality and her passion for music , dancing, and shopping. She never knew a stranger ”Hey Shuga”. She was always sassy, funny, fashionable, ready to give a helping hand to anyone in need, and the one to tell you like it is whether you wanted to hear it or not. She had a heart of gold and a soul to match.

To carry on her legacy two daughters Michelle T Daniel and Yvonne C. Smith; one step daughter Sandra Smith; one granddaughter Latoya M Harden; four Godchildren Deborah Harden(Richard), Patricia Williams, Pierre Williams, LaTrice Scrubb; several nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews; along with a host of close and dear friends.
