Served with Sgt. Mason in Feudenheim, Germany from 10/1957-05/1959 at 86th Ord. Det.
Always remembered him for the strong and thoughtful man that he was.
Remember celebrating New Years Eve 1958 in his home with his family.
Remember the telephone conversation we had when I located him in his retirement in Ga. around 1998.
Had to let him know my thoughts had always been of him with gratitude and respect for the leader he had been to us.
He updated me and expressed his pride in his wonderful family.
My very belated condolences to all his family.

My warmest thoughts are with the Mason family. I didn't have the privilege of knowing Joel Mason, but I have known and loved his daughter Georgia who is a tribute to his life.

Dear Mason family, on Thursday night, the 16th, I was sharing with my sister and daughter the memories I have of Uncle Vasco and Aunt Hazel.
I remember my parents, Eva Jo and Herman, always laughed in their presence. They opened their home to me without hesitation during my visit to Atlanta for the Olympics. How strange it was to receive the news of Uncle Vasco on this day of remembering. I pray that you all will be comforted by our amazing God as only he can do. Praise God that we can anticipate with great joy our reunion with our loved ones. Heaven becomes very real when we have family waiting. 
My love and prayers to Kenneth, Georgia Lee, David and your families.

My wife and I loved Joel, and He was my Hero. We both are sadden at his passing, but are so thankful to God, that he accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior. Please know that you have our deepest sympathies in your loss. We grieve with you too.

So many wonderful memories of our two families together. My parents loved their time with Hazel and Joel, but I think my Dad especially felt a kinship with Joel. Whether they talked about sports, spouses, or nothing at all, like "grumpy old men" do, they were good times. Your Dad will be missed. He left a wonderful footprint on this world--his service to our country, loving husband, wonderful children, many who loved him. My prayers continue for comfort and peace for the entire family, knowing that Joel is home and at peace. God Bless you all.

Finding the right words for a loss of a  parent is very difficult.  Just saying I'm sorry for your loss, just doesn't seem enough.  Knowing and loving,  the man, the father, grandfather, great grandfather is even harder.  Joel was an inspiration to all, a man of courage, respect of himself and others, a very honorable man I had the privilege of having him in my life.  He always made me feel like I belonged.   Rest in peace, sir.....You will be greatly missed.
