Although we morn the loss of our dear brother, we also celebrate the passing of his spirit from this earthly world to the Heavens of the Most High. Thurman was born in Goldsboro NC on November 17, 1967 to Walter O. Herring Jr. and Emma Jean Cobb. He moved to Atlanta GA in the early 2000s to be close to his mother who relocated here a few years before. Thurman was the seventh of eight children. He is survived by his Mother Emma Jean Johnson and his Step-Father Gregory Frank Johnson of Atlanta GA. He leaves behind his paternal Grandmother, Odell Herring (98 years old) of Baltimore MD and his six surviving siblings James Perry Dixon of Wilmington NC, Jean Carol Hope of Atlanta GA, Caraletta Williams of Atlanta GA, Walter Herring III of Fayetteville NC, Terry Theodore Herring of Alanta GA, and Dr. Melvin Herring of Charlotte NC. Thurman had one sister, Gloria Towana Herring who earned her angel wings on November 9, 1995. Thurman also leaves behind four children: Roshenia Johnson, Treva Herring, Thurman Herring Jr. of Virginia, and Torri Bethea or Atlanta GA. Lastly, he is survived by ten grandchildren.
Thurman had a beautiful spirit and was beloved by everyone that he established a relationship with. He truly was a person who would give you the shirt off of his back if you were in need. All who knew Thurman will remember him for his loving heart and the kindness he provided through his warm smile. He had a deep and unbreakable bond of love with his family and especially with his children. To this day, their eyes light up at the mention of his name. Thurman loved to cook, play pool and basketball, do home improvement projects with his brothers, have an occasional smoke and drink with his friends, but most of all, he loved to spend time with his kids and grandchildren. He was a talented young man who worked very hard to elevate his standard of living and move his life into a positive direction. Unfortunately, he never got a chance to fully explore the entire spectrum of his potential. We are saddened by this but we trust that this is a part of God’s plan for Thurman.
The family has chosen to forego a traditional funeral and instead conduct this celebration of Thurman’s life. We want to remember Thurman’s smile, laughter, hugs, beautiful heart, and great spirit. We want to remember the great and exciting life he lived and the eternal blessings he will receive as he takes his place at the side of Lord God Almighty.
