Brooks was born in Baltimore, Maryland. When Brooks was a child his family moved to Palm Beach County, Florida, where he became a lifelong resident. Growing up, Brooks would leave the house every morning on an adventure of a lifetime, which his mother knew would end in mischief or a trip to the doctors. He enjoyed playing sports, mostly football, boxing and weightlifting. His most interesting childhood memories began with, “Out on Lawrence Road.”
Brooks graduated from Seacrest High School. He enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and later joined the Department of Defense where he served his country honorably and with valor. Brooks was a Scoutmaster for the Boy Scouts of America and earned the Eagle Scout Rank. He began his career at Lawyer’s Title Services, Inc. where he met his beautiful wife of 51 years, Joyce. Brooks was a member of the Kiwanis Club of West Palm Beach. He retired from the Palm Beach County Property Appraiser with 27 years of service and two designations: Assessment Administrative Specialist (AAS) and Certified Florida Evaluator (CFE).
After retirement, Brooks enjoyed visiting the Smokies, Blue Ridge Mountains and Disney World with his wife. He loved his family gatherings and cookouts, adored his grandchildren, admired nature with his loyal companion and appreciated a good cigar with his smoke buddies. Brooks spent his free time napping and watching college football, westerns and war movies. His hobbies included painting, crossword puzzles and video games.
Brooks leaves to cherish his memories, his loving and devoted wife, Joyce; son, David (Mimi) Shackley; daughter, Deanna (David) Fantin; mother, Opal Shackley; mother-in-law, Jeannine Wickles; grandchildren, Jeff Shackley, Ali (Jon) Fuller, Kyle Shackley and Jaden Fantin; great-grandchildren, Audrina and Myles Fuller; brothers-in-law, Milt (Nicki) Wickles and Larry Wickles; sister-in-law, Louise Wickles; an extremely loud and yappy loyal companion, Abbie; and numerous nieces and nephews and extended family and friends.
