Colleen (Col, Collsie, Nana) spent the ages of 6-13 growing up in Panama, where her father was working in the Panama Canal Zone from 1941-1948. She spoke fondly of her time in Panama and especially loved that it was always warm enough to play outside. After moving back to the States, Colleen attended Blessed Sacrament High School in New Rochelle, NY.
One of Colleen’s first jobs was as a secretary for a law firm in New York City. The firm she worked for represented Disney. She often told the story of meeting Walt Disney when she was called in for dictation of a meeting with him. She recalled how nice he was, how nervous she was, and how she rushed back to the office to rewrite her notes afterward.
In 1958, Colleen married her husband John. They raised their 5 children in Mamaroneck, NY. Their home on Leatherstocking Lane was always bustling with family, friends, and neighbors. Sunday dinner with one or both sets of grandparents was a common occurrence. Colleen was very festive and loved to decorate, celebrate the holidays and host parties. She loved to dance and was known to dance in the living room from time to time. Her warmth, elegance, and love brightened every room she was in.
Colleen and John made the leap to start SND Electronics together. At the beginning, Colleen would stay up late into the night doing accounting for the family business from home. Her grandchildren remember visiting her at the office and eating Lorna Doone cookies from her desk drawer.
Colleen had many hobbies but her greatest passion was tennis. She started playing with her best friend, the late Alice Pisco. They would take their youngest children to the public tennis courts at Harbor Island to practice. They eventually joined the team at Orienta Beach Club. Colleen continued to play for many years and spread her love for tennis to her family and friends. She also enjoyed playing bridge, reading, and riding bikes with her friends. She had many girlfriends and cherished these friendships dearly.
Colleen passed away one week after her beloved husband John. They are survived by their children Neil (Hiromi), Greg (Ellen), Laura Miller (David); her daughter-in-law Tracy; and her grandchildren Danielle, Megan, Lara, TJ, Ryan, Shannon, Devan, Zachary, Colleen, Amanda, Francine, and John.
She is predeceased by her sons David and Stephen; her sister Patricia Hawley; and her brothers Thomas and Ronald McEvoy.
The family will honor Colleen and John with a mass on June 13, 2024 at Saints John & Paul Parish in Larchmont, NY at 10:00 am.
Colleen will be dearly missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing her. Her light, love, and the laughs shared will be cherished by her family and friends forever.
