He was born in Woburn, Massachusetts on February 23, 1941 to Mildred and Edward Harkins.
David graduated from Winchester High School in 1958 before continuing on to the United States Military Academy at West Point where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Engineering in 1962. He played both ice hockey and lacrosse at West Point and received All American honors in both sports. After graduation he proudly served his country for “4 years, 2 months and 17 days”.
David married Sheryll Joyce Harkins (Barnes) on May 2, 1970. They were married for 53 years and had two children and four grandchildren. A devoted husband, father and grandfather, David was a permanent fixture at the sporting events of his children and grandchildren and was loved by their teammates and their parents alike.
David was a founding partner at The Thomas H. Lee Company where he served as President for many years. He began working at the company in the mid-eighties and had a very successful business career and served on the boards of various portfolio companies. He was best known for his charisma, business acumen and skills in negotiation. Many of his work colleagues could also be counted among his lifelong friends.
David was an avid golfer who spent countless hours playing with friends at Tedesco Country Club (Marblehead, MA), Jupiter Hills Club (Jupiter, FL), The Bears Club (Jupiter, FL), and Oyster Harbors Club (Osterville, MA). He especially enjoyed playing golf with his son, Jason.
David is survived by his wife, Sheryll, his two children, Jason and his wife, Anika, of North Palm Beach, Florida, and Jessica Styles and her husband, Jeremy, their four children, Logan, Sadie, Dawson and Lainey, of South Hamilton, MA, and his sister Barbara Harkins and her husband Michael Symonds of Carlisle, MA.
David is predeceased by his father Edward Harkins, his mother, Mildred Harkins, and his two sisters, Kathleen and Maureen Harkins.
There will be a private service for the family in the spring.
