David was born in Buffalo, New York, to Mabel and Albert Kolac. He earned his bachelor’s degree from Maryville College and went on to Princeton Theological Seminary, where he received a Master of Divinity. He later completed additional theological studies, including a Master of Theology from San Francisco Theological Seminary and a Doctor of Ministry from the Ohio Consortium.
Ordained as a minister in the Presbyterian Church, David faithfully served congregations in Ohio and Indiana before accepting a call in 1982 to serve as senior pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of Tequesta, Florida. During his ministry, he led with vision and compassion, establishing programs such as a Youth Advisory Council, Home Delivered Meals, Dial-a-Ride, and community holiday dinners. His leadership helped strengthen both the Church and the broader community.
In 1991, Dave married Joan and together they shared many joyful years, traveling widely and spending time with family.
Beyond the pulpit, David was a gifted and enthusiastic singer. He and Joan were active members of the Treasure Coast Community Singers, especially following his retirement from active ministry. He was also known as a thoughtful counselor, a dedicated scholar, a voracious reader, and someone who found joy in simple, creative pursuits—including puppeteering for children and photography.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Joan (Hislop) Thomas; his sons, Timothy (Susan) and Arthur (Susan Jacobberger) Thomas; and his cherished grandchildren, Kyle (Carley) and Shelby (Seth) Thomas.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Nina Ruth Thomas; his son, Joel Thomas; his daughter-in-law, Elizabeth Thomas; his twin brother, Raymond Lord; his older brother, Gerald Kolac; and his younger sister, Thia Gasper.
David’s life was further marked by his commitment to service, including mission work in Haiti, and by the deep loyalty and kindness he showed to family and friends. He will be remembered for his gentle spirit, wisdom, and unwavering faith.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the First Presbyterian Church of Tequesta.
A “Celebration of Life” gathering will be held at a future date in Jupiter, FL.
