Edward Portalatin, 82, of Juno Beach, Florida, passed away peacefully on December 5, 2018 within the comfort of his family. He was born on April 19, 1936 in The Bronx, New York to Josephine and Frank Portalatin. He was raised in New York City as one of nine children, and spent the first four years of his adult life as a member of the United States Army, stationed in Alaska. His professional life included decades of leadership in the printing industry, with sales leading to his outstanding accomplishments. He was lovingly married for 56 years to Maria Portalatin. They raised their two children, Christina and Christopher Portalatin in Connecticut, and retired to South Florida ten years ago.

Eddie will always be remembered for his kindness and generosity, for his smile, his laughter, his crazy jokes and most of all his love for singing and dancing. Whenever and wherever the opportunity, he would be the liveliest person in a social gathering. In addition to spending time with friends and family, the New York Yankees and New York Giants were his fondest hobbies.

Beyond his professional and financial success, his greatest enjoyment came from spending time with his four grandchildren, Drew, Alyssa, Stephanie and Chloe. He enjoyed dance recitals, birthdays, sporting events, graduations and fundraisers with them and their friends, and will be forever remembered as Grandpa to all.

Ed is survived by his wife, Maria, his daughter Christina and her husband Michael and their two daughters Alyssa and Stephanie Case, his son Christopher and his two children Drew and Chloe Portalatin. Of his eight siblings he is also survived by two brothers, John and Robert Portalatin and one sister Alice Squeri.

Ed lost his fight with dementia, but his spirit of kindness and generosity will live on forever. Please feel free to share your stories, thoughts and photos with Ed. These thoughts and memories be in our hearts always.

I got to meet Ed about a year ago. I was very lucky to have met him and share happy times with him and his family. He was always smiling. He was a kind, sweet man. Made everyone around him happy. You will be sadly missed. Love you.

I was so glad I got to meet Ed before he passed. I can see that he was a huge impact in Stephanie's life and that she adored him so much. Every time I was with him he was always so happy and loving towards everyone. He was always so quick to make a joke and make you smile. I know that everyone will miss him so much and I was truly blessed to be able to meet him and see where everyone that looked up to him got his sense of care and love. His family lives each day in his memory in the acts of love and kindness they show to anyone they come across. Although he is gone from this physical world, he is looking down and smiling seeing what his loved ones have accomplished and become.

Much love,
Josh

To Grandpa:
My grandpa meant so much to me and I know he loved his grandchildren more than life. When I thought about what it would mean to my grandpa to celebrate his life, I could really only think of ways to talk about the happy memories that we shared. I decided to share some of the best Eddie quotes. Both quotes have some story behind it that made him into the loving grandfather that I will always remember.

My grandpa and I shared quite a few characteristics but of all our commonalities, one stands out the most! Our love for eating. As the saying goes in our family, “grandpa will eat anything you put in front of him!” Some of my grandpa’s favorite foods were ya know those $1 wake up wraps from McDonalds; definitely the sugar cookies during Christmas time, of course strawberry ice cream, and most of all good ole Puerto Rican rice and beans! Everyone always knew when grandpa was craving some dessert because after dinner he would say, “Does anyone else want an ice cream sandwich?” And then of course I would say “sure grandpa! Let me go get us one!”

Some of my favorite days spent with my grandpa were in Connecticut when my grandparents would come live with us for a few months. I remember getting so excited when my grandparents would come up right around the end of the school year and stay through the summer. My real excitement came from the fact that my grandpa would finally be home and would be able to pick me up from the bus stop, that way I didn’t have to walk half a mile, up a hill to get home! The best feeling would be getting off the bus and hopping in that little Volkswagen to have grandpa listening to his mini radio with the Yankees playing. (And then of course when we got home, grandma would have snacks waiting for us.) Once we were home and grandpa had the Yankees playing on the TV, I would ask him “So grandpa, what did you do today?” and he would respond, “Ahh not too much!"

My grandpa will always be with me as my guardian angel.

There are no words to best describe Eddie. I call him the Big E simply because what he meant to me and my family. 47 years ago when my mom and dad moved to the top of a God forsaken mountain in tiny Monroe CT, who knew it was God who brought us, the DiPiazza family, to the Portalatin family.

The memories could take a lifetime to tell. One story or picture (or scar) better than the next. All the successes, and hardships, celebrated together. A friendship that turned into family and brothers. Wherever my Dad was, Eddie was. Wherever we were, the Portalatins were. It was a bond that made my childhood what it was. Who knew the top of the mountain would be our Camelot.

He was bigger than life itself. He was my Uncle E. He was my Dads best friend, brother from another mother, in life and now in death. But they’re together again, playing piano singing and dancing, putting on a show for everyone. Happy, healthy, vibrant and so worthy of a everlasting life being the best damn Angels God ever created.

You will be missed Big E.

Grandpa Eddie was one of the most amazing people I was blessed to know and have in my life for many years. Whenever he walked into a room, his contagious spirit, smile, laughter and love for all touched anyone around him. He treated us as his own and apart of his family, and I will always look at him as a grandfather. Ill never forget all the songs he would sing and his amazing dance moves! Those will live on forever. I am quite certain he's already the star of the show up there in heaven, that was grandpa always! He has had a tremendous impact on me in so many ways & will always be in my heart. Love you so much Grandpa, watch over us. xoxo
Sending so much love to Ama, the Case & Portalatin families.

My heart is full of the fondest memories of Eddie. He and Ama always treated us like family. A sweet, gentle, funny man who was always a pleasure to be around. I'm beyond grateful that "grandpa" blessed my children's lives. They loved him like he was their own grandpa. I'm so thankful I got to spend time with him this summer, where even though his illness was taking a toll on him, the sweet, funny man still shone through. Love and hugs to the Case and Portalatin families

There are not enough words that could ever describe what Eddie did for myself and for my family. He was one of the most amazing guys, a true gentleman, always ready to make you smile, laugh and ask you for a dance. I am so grateful to have had him in my life as a child especially when mine did not live near by. He and Ama always treated me and loved me as if I was their own. Eddie also had a profound impact on my dad for which I will be forever grateful. He will be so missed and his life will be celebrated. So much love, strength and prayers go out to the Case's and Portalatin's.
