Elizabeth Montgomery Stattner, affectionately known as Bette, left this world on July 21, 2024 to join her husband, Steven Allen Stattner, in their forever afterlife. She was 84 years young. Her adoring daughter, Allison, gave her comfort and peace throughout her final days.
Bette was born in Yeadon, Pennsylvania; the only child of Frank Walter Montgomery and Eleanor Jane Schwindt. The family often took the train to the Shore, to their first home in Avalon, NJ on 5th Street. After graduating from Yeadon High School, she attended the University of Pennsylvania.
After Bette and Steve wed, she took him to Avalon and they never left, always feeling a connection to the small beach town. Their first home was on 31st street, where they could be found taking long walks on the beach with a gin and tonic, fishing on the pier or hosting friends. Later, the party moved to 8th street. An active member of the First United Methodist Church of Avalon, Bette left her legacy through the beautiful needlepoint kneelers crafted by hand, still adorning the church. As President of the Avalon Garden Club, she commissioned the sculpture of the child flying the kite, which welcomes every visitor and resident to the Island.
She was expert in making memories; her wanderlust never waned. The consummate hostess, her energy lives on in every friendship and remembrance. She will truly be missed by her dear friends, daughter Allison and granddaughter Madeleine.
Elizabeth is also survived by her other children, 7 more grandchildren, and many beloved great grandchildren.
May the Lord shine her light down upon us for eternity. Amen.
There will not be a service. The earthly ashes of Elizabeth and Steven will become an eternal reef off of South Florida. A celebration of life will be in Islamorada, FL where the couple spent their happy hours dancing barefoot and carefree.
